DESCRIPTION OF DUTIES/ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

Ensures that construction meets local and national building codes, ordinances and technical specifications through various duties that include, but are not limited to the following:

  • Inspects mechanical, electrical, plumbing, or structural systems to ensure they comply with building codes and local ordinances.
  • Provides written feedback related to the findings.
  • Performs record keeping activities, maintains daily logs, records/maintains photographs taken during inspections and issues violation notices and stop-work orders under supervision of senior technical staff.
  • Monitors construction sites periodically to ensure overall compliance with codes.
  • Meets with public, contractors, technical professionals, and businesses to respond to inquiries and technical problems.
  • Researches and evaluates plans, specifications, and drawings.
  • Prepares and submits various technical reports.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

WORKING CONDITIONS

The position routinely requires lifting of moderately heavy items, such as computers or records boxes (up to 40 pounds) and/or very long periods of walking on rough surfaces on a routine basis

This is a Department of Houston Public Works Emergency Management Position at the Tier II Level.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

EDUCATIONAL REQUIREMENTS

Requires High School Diploma or G.E.D. and up to 18 months of education or training in the area of inspection to be performed.

EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS

Two (2) years of journey level or skilled experience related to the area of inspection to be performed are required.

LICENSE REQUIREMENTS

May require a valid Texas Drivers License and be in compliance with the City of Houston policy on driving (AP 2-2).

PREFERENCES

Journey level is a union card holding member that skilled in each building trade or craft, who has successfully completed an official apprenticeship qualification. Journey level is considered certified to work in that field.

Preference shall be given to eligible veteran applicants provided such persons possess the qualifications necessary for competent discharge of the duties involved in the position applied for, such persons are among the most qualified candidates for the position, and all other factors in accordance with Executive Order 1-6.
