THE POSITION
The Infant Nutrition Counselor (INC) bilingual Spanish position provides lactation and breastfeeding information, education, support, and referrals to women participating in the Breastfeeding Peer Counseling Program. The INC offers peer-based support to mothers and infants (the mom/baby dyad) to encourage successful breastfeeding and promote positive infant nutrition practices.
This class is distinguished from the Health Assistant classification, which primarily performs routine assessments, patient education, and/or technical support functions within one or more public health programs. In contrast, the Infant Nutrition Counselor focuses specifically on providing peer counseling and breastfeeding support services to WIC participants.
The Infant Nutrition Counselor provides individualized support to breastfeeding clients by offering guidance, referrals to WIC and community resources, and facilitating peer support opportunities. Services may include assisting mothers with breastfeeding concerns, providing education on breastfeeding best practices, and connecting families with appropriate health resources. The INC may also serve as a point of contact for breastfeeding support outside of normal business hours.
Infant Nutrition Counselors are trained through the WIC program and work under the guidance and oversight of the Lactation Educator and Counselor classification. INCs are skilled peer counselors who often draw upon their own breastfeeding experiences to provide relatable support, encouragement, and practical guidance to participating mothers.
The eligible list established from this recruitment will be used to fill full-time regular, part-time, limited-term or extra-help positions as vacancies occur or the need arises.
