Do you want your designs to move beyond concepts and directly impact safety, performance, and innovation across industries?

About Stress Engineering Services

For over 50 years, Stress Engineering Services (SES) has been recognized globally as a highly specialized technical consulting firm trusted to solve the toughest challenges in industry. Our work spans energy, petrochemical, industrial, consumer, power generation, aerospace, and medical sectors—where failure is not an option and precision matters.

We combine scientific rigor with practical engineering judgment, delivering solutions that directly impact safety, reliability, and performance.

Overview

Stress Engineering Services, Inc. (SES) is a premier provider of innovation and product development services across a wide range of industries. The Industrial Design Group is foundational to SES and works hand-in-hand with our engineers to deliver powerful, real-world solutions by integrating strategy, design, and engineering throughout the product development lifecycle.

This is not a “design-for-design’s-sake” role—this is design that solves meaningful, high-impact problems.

Our Core Values

At SES, how we work matters just as much as what we deliver.

  • We Over Me – We put our mission, clients, and team above individual agendas.
  • Unyielding Pursuit of Excellence – Excellence is our standard. We deliver the right solution, on time, every time.
  • Own It – We take personal and collective accountability to build trust and deliver results.

The Role

We are seeking an Industrial Designer with strong form generation skills, mechanical aptitude, and a collaborative mindset. You’ll work closely with engineers, designers, and clients in a fast-paced consulting environment where adaptability, curiosity, and ownership are essential.

You will help bring complex ideas to life—from early concept sketches through CAD modeling and prototyping—while contributing to projects that have real-world consequences and visibility.

Key Responsibilities

  • Participate in meetings with prospective and current clients
  • Support proposals, reports, and marketing materials for engineering-driven projects
  • Lead concept sketching, development, and CAD modeling for design-driven programs
  • Create sketches and illustrations to explore new product ideas or enhance existing designs
  • Interpret blueprints, detailed drawings, and CAD models to communicate design intent
  • Fabricate physical models using 3D printing and other prototyping methods
  • Iterate and refine models based on client feedback and technical requirements
  • Research design trends, materials, and product constraints
  • Collaborate with engineering, marketing, production, and sales teams to evaluate design concepts
  • Consider appearance, safety, function, serviceability, budget, manufacturing methods, and market needs throughout the design process

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Industrial Design from an accredited institution
  • Minimum 2 years of professional experience
  • Strong focus on human-centered design, empathy, and design thinking
  • Exceptional sketching abilities (including digital sketching tools)
  • Strong interest in brand design, design language, and form articulation
  • Advanced proficiency in SolidWorks, including surfacing and complex assemblies
  • Experience with additional CAD tools (e.g., Fusion 360, 3D surfacing software) is a plus
  • Demonstrated understanding of mechanical systems
  • Knowledge of common manufacturing processes (injection molding, blow molding, metal forming, etc.)
  • Design portfolio required (PDF or website link)
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite
  • Must be authorized to work in the United States without current or future sponsorship

A Day in the Life at SES

In this role, no two days look the same—and that’s exactly what makes it exciting.

You might start the day collaborating with engineers to translate complex technical requirements into thoughtful, human-centered design concepts. As the day unfolds, you could shift into sketching ideation concepts for a proposal, refining CAD models for an active client project, or reviewing 3D-printed prototypes for an ergonomic study to validate form, usability, and user interaction.

In the afternoon, you may join a client meeting to present concepts, gather feedback, and quickly iterate designs based on real-world constraints. Some days are highly creative—focused on form exploration, design language, and visual storytelling—while others are deeply technical, working through manufacturability, assembly, materials, and mechanical integration alongside engineering subject matter experts.

You’ll balance independent work with cross-functional collaboration, moving fluidly between concept development, detailed design, prototyping, and refinement. Because SES operates in a consulting environment, you’ll often support multiple projects across different industries, sometimes within the same week—keeping the work dynamic, challenging, and constantly evolving.

Why Join SES

  • High autonomy paired with high-impact, high-consequence work
  • See your designs influence real-world safety and performance
  • Collaborate with world-recognized subject matter experts
  • Work in a supportive, entrepreneurial, employee-owned culture
  • Build your own consulting design portfolio within SES

At SES, curiosity is encouraged and rewarded. This role offers a unique opportunity to grow as a designer while making a tangible impact on the future of products, systems, and industries that matter.

We offer competitive compensation based on market indicators and your experience, along with comprehensive benefits for eligible employees, including medical, dental, vision, paid time off, paid holidays, and more.
