Industrial Electrical Systems Technician (Facilities Maintenance)

Life Unlimited. At Smith+Nephew we design and build technology that helps people live without limits. Join our Facility Maintenance Team and keep the power on for the innovations that change lives.

A day in the life

You start by reviewing overnight logs and preventive maintenance tasks. A production area flags an electrical fault—using your test equipment and code knowledge, you isolate the issue in a three‑phase circuit and return the line to service. Later, you read single‑line diagrams to plan a conduit run, pull conductors, and terminate a new MCC bucket. In the afternoon, you test a UPS bank, exercise a standby generator, and document results. You finish the day updating work orders and coaching a teammate through a lock‑out/tag‑out sequence.

What you will do

  • Install, maintain, and repair electrical wiring, fixtures, and equipment including switchgear, MCCs, and busducts.
  • Inspect and test electrical systems/components to identify hazards, defects, or needs for adjustment or repair.
  • Interpret blueprints, drawings, schematics, and electrical code specifications to lay out industrial installations.
  • Troubleshoot electrical systems and perform corrective actions independently and safely.
  • Execute preventive maintenance programs on plant electrical assets.
  • Manage/maintain power generators, disconnects, and UPS systems.
  • Plan and install conduit; perform precise conduit bends and wire pulls.
  • Apply working knowledge of electrical systems, machines, and tools—their design, use, repair, and maintenance.
  • Work confidently with high‑voltage three‑phase circuits, generators, transformers, and switchgear.
  • Use a range of electrical/mechanical test devices for diagnostics and verification.
  • Respond rapidly to electrical emergencies; assess scene safety and direct affected individuals to ensure safety and comfort.
  • Demonstrate comprehensive knowledge and experience of lock-out/tag-out program with regards to OSHA 29 CFR 19190.147 control of hazardous equipment.
  • Ensure compliance with company safety policies, procedures, and quality standards.
  • Maintain accurate service documentation and complete reports in a timely manner.
  • Participate in on-call rotation and perform miscellaneous job-related duties as assigned.

What you need to succeed

  • Experience with Electrical Single Line blueprints and fault finding in apparatus/circuits.
  • Skilled with hand and power tools applicable to the trade.
  • Capability to lead others in troubleshooting and emergency repairs; develop and implement planned maintenance programs.
  • Ability to read, understand, and follow safety procedures; strong oral and written communication.
  • Service mindset for an internal manufacturing customer base.
  • Availability to respond 24/7 and work weekends, nights, and holidays as needed; participate in on‑call rotation.

About the Company

Smith & Nephew - USA

The Group has a history dating back 160 years to the family enterprise of Thomas James Smith who opened a small pharmacy in Hull, England in 1856. On his death in 1896, his nephew Horatio Nelson Smith took over the management of the business. Thomas James Smith black and white photograph Image: Thomas James Smith A few days after the declaration of World War 1 in 1914, Horatio Nelson Smith (the nephew of the company founder T. J Smith) met with an envoy of the French President in London. The company was awarded a contract to supply £350,000 of surgical and field dressings, to be delivered in five months. By the late 1990s, Smith & Nephew had expanded into being a diverse healthcare conglomerate with operations across the globe, including various medical devices, personal care products and traditional and pioneering woundcare treatments. In 1998, Smith & Nephew announced a major restructuring to focus management attention and investment on three business units — wound management, endoscopy and orthopaedics — which offered high growth and margin opportunities. Smith & Nephew was incorporated and listed on the London Stock Exchange in 1937 and in 1999 the Group was also listed on the New York Stock Exchange. In 2001, Smith & Nephew became a constituent member of the FTSE-100 index in the UK. This means that Smith & Nephew is included in the top 100 companies traded on the London Stock Exchange measured in terms of market capitalisation. Today, Smith & Nephew is a public limited company incorporated and headquartered in the UK and doing business in many countries around the world.
