Industrial Automation Field Commissioning Technician

Picture your week: you’re on a customer site partnering with Integration Engineers, tracing signals from field I/O to the PLC, validating interlocks, and bringing new or upgraded equipment to life. You thrive in high-pressure situations, communicate clearly with plant personnel and internal teammates, and keep projects moving toward safe, successful commissioning. You travel regularly, operate with growing independence, and represent CLX Engineering with professionalism.

You’ll support troubleshooting and commissioning on industrial control systems, steadily deepening your controls knowledge while remaining hands-on with electrical systems. Expect extended onsite rotations (up to six months or more when needed) followed by scheduled time at home.

What You’ll Do

  • Diagnose and resolve electrical issues across field I/O and PLC-based systems; interface with PLCs for testing and verification without altering or editing PLC programs.
  • Work safely around PLC-controlled machinery and energized equipment, following procedures and lockout/tagout requirements.
  • Communicate professionally with customers, team members, and stakeholders—staying calm and solution-focused under pressure.
  • Maintain a clean driving record to meet travel and site-access needs.
  • Support non-standard schedules (nights/weekends) to align with outage windows and production demands.
  • Travel to client facilities, including extended assignments; typical patterns include multi-week onsite rotations followed by planned time off at home.
  • Adapt to shifting project priorities and take on new responsibilities as required.

Required Qualifications

  • High school diploma or AS degree (or equivalent applied experience).
  • 2+ years of experience in the electrical trade or industrial environment.
  • Excellent communicator who maintains composure in high-pressure settings.
  • Proven troubleshooting skills with I/O and PLC systems, including interfacing for diagnostics without code changes.

Must Be Able/Willing To

  • Hold and maintain a clean driving record.
  • Work nights, weekends, and other non-standard hours as projects require.
  • Travel locally on short notice and non-locally with notice (35%–50% on occasion).
  • Support night shifts or atypical schedules during busy periods or project lulls.
  • Use standard hand tools confidently and safely.
  • Present a professional demeanor and appearance on every site.

Desired Skills

  • AutoCAD and/or AutoCAD Electrical.
  • Experience editing or troubleshooting PLC software such as Studio/Logix 5000 or equivalents (Siemens, Allen-Bradley, Mitsubishi).
