Job Summary:

GENERAL DESCRIPTION
The Immersion School Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) plans health programs, coordinates, and provides health care services to students, clients, and staff for Cherokee Language Immersion School.

Job Duties:

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
• Acts as a school nurse for the Immersion School.
• Provides and assists in implementing preventative health programs, in cooperation with Cherokee Nation medical authority and administrative school personnel.
• Coordinates vision, hearing & dental screening, and participates in physical examinations.
• Reviews findings to evaluate health status of students, clients, and staff.
• Reviews immunizations status to ensure immunizations meet the Oklahoma State Department of Health and Cherokee Nation's requirements; obtains access to OSIIS and documents appropriate information.
• Works with school personnel for early detection of social, emotional and physical problems and needs of students.
• Refers students in need of medical, psychological and/or dental care as needed and provides follow-up on all referred students within one week.
• Documents all activities in the schools' health file at the time of service.
• Reports to parents/legal guardians, school personnel, medical and other pertinent health personnel on health issues.
• Assists in promoting health programs on health promotion and education to assist students, clients and staff in developing positive health habits.
• Serves as a resource person for the classroom teacher in health instruction program.
• Presents health information to students and clients in groups or individually in areas which have grown out of the health and safety needs such as tobacco, alcohol, and drug use; HIV AIDS, childcare, family planning, first aid, etc.
• Administers first aid and provides first responder aid for students and staff in accordance with the facility and Cherokee Nation emergency procedures.
• Identifies and implements appropriate nursing measures to remedy health problems.
• Ensures exclusion and re-admission of students related to communicable diseases or conditions.
• Participates in in-service training programs and other programs to promote professional growth.
• Adheres to and maintains working knowledge of Cherokee Nation Health and Education Division Mission Statements.
• Maintains daily records of nursing activities, prepares and submits required reports to the appropriate school, center and other personnel.
• Takes part in annual competency test through the Cherokee Nation Health Services nursing program and turns in copies of results at the Immersion School.
• Ensures standing orders are reviewed and updated annually, including obtaining signatures from the medical provider assigned by the Cherokee Nation Medical Director.
• Performs other duties, tasks, and services consistent with this position as assigned.


LEVEL OF RESPONSIBILITY
• This position does not directly oversee any individuals.
• Assignments received in broad terms with timelines and objectives set.

Qualifications:

QUALIFICATIONS
• Associate’s degree or an equivalent combination of education and experience in lieu of degree.
• Must have intermediate proficiency in the Cherokee Language.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to sit; use hands to finger, handle, or feel and talk or hear. The employee is occasionally required to stand; walk; reach with hands and arms; climb or balance and stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl. The employee must regularly lift and /or move up to 10 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move
up to 50 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus.


CERTIFICATES, LICENES, REGISTRATIONS
• Must possess a valid driver's license with a driving history verified through a motor vehicle report that meets the requirements for Cherokee Nation underwriting rating.
• Must possess or obtain CPR and first aid certification within six (6) months of hire and maintain throughout employment.
• Must possess or obtain a valid Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) within six (6) months of hire and maintain throughout employment.


OTHER REQUIREMENTS
• The employee must not be and will not be under sanction by the United States Department of Health and Human Services Office of the Inspector General (OIG) or by the General Services Administration (GSA) or listed on the OIG's Cumulative Sanction Report, or the GSA's List of Excluded Providers, or listed on the OIG's List of Excluded Individuals/Entities (LEIE).
• Must meet and maintain pre-employment and periodic background investigation and adjudication for childcare.
