Summary of Position

Join the fun and share your talents with the Coon Rapids community serving the Ice Center! Work under general direction of the Skating Director, teaching skating skills during group lessons by utilizing the Learn to Skate USA, Program, and US Figure Skating traditional test levels. Instructors encourage, teach, inspire and assists skaters in advancement through skating levels. In this rewarding opportunity you get to share your love for skating and ice skating skills and see your students grow and accomplish their development goals under your instruction!

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Essential duties listed below are intended only as illustrations of the various types of work that may be performed. The omission of specific statements of duties does not exclude them if the work is similar, related or a logical assignment to the position.

  • Instructs group lessons individually or with assistant. (Note: instructor is responsible for finding a qualified substitute instructor for absences.)
  • Responsible for end of session progress reports sent home with each student.
  • Coordinates individual and/or group numbers for Ice Show.
  • Assists with testing sessions.
  • Attendance during regularly scheduled work hours and outside regular hours as necessary.
  • Effective and respectful communication and interactions with other employees, supervisors, individuals from other organizations, and citizen customers.
  • Performs other related functions as apparent or delegated.

Required Knowledge and Abilities

To perform this position successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skills, and/or abilities required.

  • Completion of US Figure Skating Pre-Bronze/Pre-Juvenile Singles (Free Skate) test or Coon Rapids Ice Center Apprentice Program or equivalent training program.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with co-workers.
  • Promotes a favorable working relationship with all ice users.
  • Ability to effectively communicate orally and in writing.
  • Ability to perform duties with tact and discretion.
  • Handles confidential information appropriately.
  • Ability to perform job functions with high degree of accuracy.
  • Ability to organize and manage multiple tasks, work effectively under pressure, and completes work in a timely and accurate manner with minimal supervision.

Qualifications and Other Information

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

A combination of training and experience substantially equivalent to the following:

Minimum 16 years of age and skating experience as outlined above. Ability to work effectively and courteously with the public is essential.

PREFERRED:

  • Successful completion of US Figure Skating Bronze/Juvenile Singles (Free Skate) test.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

The physical demands described herein are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential duties of the job. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals to perform the essential functions.

  • Ability to stand and skate for long periods of time.
  • Ability to work in cool temperatures.
  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to sit; use hands to finger, handle, feel or operate objects, tools or keyboards; speak intelligibly, hear and read.
  • The employee is frequently required to stand, walk and reach with hands and arms.
  • The employee must occasionally move, turn, lift and carry objects weighing up to the amount of the student skater using a jump harness, up to approximately 30 pounds.
  • Specific vision abilities required by this position include close vision, color vision, distance vision and depth perception.

EQUIPMENT/JOB LOCATION:

The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of the job. Duties performed will be primarily within the Ice Center location. This position works closely with others. Noise level in the ice center can be loud.

Are you eligible for veterans preference points? The City of Coon Rapids operates under a point preference system, which awards points to qualified veterans to supplement their application. Ten points are granted to non-disabled veterans on open competitive examinations; 15 points are awarded if the veteran has a service connected compensable disability as certified by the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (USDVA). To qualify for preference for a competitive exam, you must have a passing score for the position and be a qualified veteran.
