Hybrid- IBM i / AS400 (iSeries) Peformance Engineer - Colchester, VT 

  • 6 month assignment starting in June 2026 
  • 40 hours 
  • This is a Hybrid role. Candidates need to live within commuting distance of Colchester, VT to travel onsite when needed. 

Summary

  • We are seeking an experienced IBM i / AS400 (iSeries) Performance Engineer to provide advanced performance analysis, optimization, and operational support for critical IBM i environments. This role requires a hands-on specialist who can proactively identify performance bottlenecks, analyze system resource utilization, make optimization recommendations, and lead remediation efforts across production environments.
  • The ideal candidate will possess deep expertise with IBM i performance analysis tools and have a proven track record of improving system performance, capacity utilization, application responsiveness, and overall system stability.

Key Responsibilities

  • Analyze and troubleshoot IBM i performance bottlenecks across CPU, memory, disk, database, jobs, subsystems, and workloads.
  • Perform capacity planning and provide recommendations for system optimization and resource utilization.
  • Utilize IBM i performance analysis tools such as GIAPA, Job Watcher, Robot Monitor, Performance Data Investigator (PDI), Collection Services, Navigator for i, iDoctor, and related monitoring tools.
  • Lead performance remediation efforts and collaborate with application teams to resolve performance-related issues.
  • Conduct performance trend analysis and develop proactive recommendations to improve system stability and scalability.
  • Provide day-to-day support and administration of IBM i (AS400) systems.
  • Execute system maintenance, including PTFs, upgrades, and patch management.
  • Manage backup and recovery processes, ensuring data integrity and availability.
  • Troubleshoot and resolve system, job, application, and performance issues.
  • Administer user profiles, security settings, and access controls.
  • Support batch processing, job scheduling, and job queue management.
  • Collaborate with application teams to support deployments and changes.
  • Maintain documentation, runbooks, operational procedures, and performance analysis reports.
  • Ensure compliance with security policies and audit requirements.

Required Qualifications

  • 5+ years of experience supporting IBM i / AS400 environments.
  • Strong knowledge of IBM i OS (OS/400), CL commands, job control, and system administration.
  • 5+ years of hands-on IBM i performance engineering experience, including performance analysis, bottleneck identification, capacity planning, and remediation.
  • Demonstrated experience using IBM i performance analysis and monitoring tools such as GIAPA, Job Watcher, Robot Monitor, Collection Services, Performance Data Investigator (PDI), Navigator for i, iDoctor, or similar tools.
  • Ability to independently analyze performance data, identify root causes of system slowdowns, and implement optimization recommendations.
  • Experience with system monitoring, troubleshooting, and production support.
  • Familiarity with backup and recovery solutions such as BRMS.
  • Understanding of IBM i security administration and user management.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with IBM Power Systems hardware.
  • Knowledge of DB2 for i, including database administration and query performance tuning.
  • Experience with high availability and disaster recovery solutions such as MIMIX or PowerHA.
  • Exposure to integration with modern platforms including Windows, Linux, APIs, and web services.
  • Experience supporting large-scale, mission-critical production environments.

Ideal Candidate

  • Proven IBM i performance engineering expertise with the ability to immediately assess and remediate performance issues.
  • Strong analytical and troubleshooting skills with experience translating performance metrics into actionable recommendations.
  • Comfortable leading performance optimization initiatives in mission-critical environments.
  • Hands-on operational mindset with strong problem-solving abilities.
  • Able to work independently with minimal ramp-up time while collaborating effectively across cross-functional teams.
