ACCOUNTING MANAGER

Location; El Segundo, CA (Hybrid, in office 2 days a week; starting in July, will be 3 days a week on site)

JOB DESCRIPTION

The Accounting Manager leads and supports month-end and year-end close activities, financial analysis and reporting, and the ongoing transformation of accounting processes. In addition to routine duties, the Accounting Manager participates in projects aimed at transforming and improving shared service processes within the company internal controls framework. The position also assists business operations in streamlining end-to-end processes, eliminating inefficiencies, and ensuring compliance with robust internal controls and standards.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Lead the month end closing process including preparation and review of journal entries, review of team members work product, and coordination of work assignments amongst team members.
  • Ensure accuracy, completeness, and timeliness of financial results prior to controller review.
  • Prepare and/or review complex accounting analyses (e.g., accruals, reserves, revenue, cost allocations, and fixed assets).
  • Act as the first line of quality control before items escalate to senior leadership.
  • Prepare account reconciliations; investigate variances and resolve reconciling items.
  • Review journal entries and account reconciliations prepared by staff, providing detailed feedback and guidance to ensure compliance with accounting standards.
  • Prepare high quality financial analyses and commentary for management.
  • Identify and implement process improvement opportunities to enhance efficiency, accuracy, and internal controls within the accounting function.
  • Provide technical guidance and constructive feedback to ensure compliance with applicable accounting standards (e.g., US GAAP).
  • Lead accounting projects end-to-end, driving planning, execution, stakeholder coordination, and disciplined follow-up to ensure timely and successful completion.
  • Develop, document, and implement Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) for key accounting processes, including journal entries and reconciliations.
  • Develop training materials, walkthroughs, and documentation to support ongoing staff onboarding and cross-training.
  • Support the SAP S/4HANA upgrade, including testing activities.
  • Lead revenue recognition initiatives, including reporting accuracy.
  • Must be able to maintain productive working relationships and treat fellow employees with respect.
  • Other duties consistent with the general nature and focus of the job and/or the goals and objectives of the department may be assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS
  • 5+ years of experience (2+ years of public accounting experience preferred).
  • Bachelors or Masters degree in Accounting.
  • Knowledge of Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP).
  • Sales / Revenue, COGS, Inventory experience. (This is NOT a corporate accounting position).
  • Experience in reviewing journal entries, basic accounting, and use of Excel.
  • Ideally, SAP experience (S4Hana is great)
  • Proficient in Excel and other Microsoft applications.
  • Proven track record of successfully leading and implementing process improvement initiatives.
  • Ability to consistently meet deadlines and demonstrate ownership of assigned tasks.
  • Strong organizational skills and detail-oriented approach.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with employees at all levels, including management and external auditors.
  • Exceptional critical thinking abilities with a proven track record of effective problem solving.
  • Ability to work independently.
NICE TO HAVE
  • CPA, Big 4, public accounting experience; this helps pre-identify the candidate as a known quantity. If a candidate has everything else the team wants, no need for CPA or Big 4 experience .
  • Process improvement mindset is nice.
