Job Summary

HVAC Tech 1: Performs installation, maintenance, and repair of heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) systems on campus. This entry-level position involves performing routine service checks, troubleshooting basic HVAC issues, and ensuring systems are running efficiently to maintain a comfortable and safe environment. The technician will work under the direction of senior HVAC personnel and will receive some on-the-job training to develop a deeper understanding of HVAC systems and their components. Key responsibilities include:

• Inspecting HVAC units • Replacing filters • Cleaning coils • Monitoring system performance • Assisting with emergency repairs as needed

HVAC Tech 2: Responsible for the installation, maintenance, troubleshooting, and repair of heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) systems on campus. This role ensures that all HVAC systems operate efficiently and reliably to provide a comfortable and safe environment for occupants. The technician will perform preventive maintenance, troubleshoot equipment malfunctions, and collaborate with other maintenance personnel to address HVAC-related issues.

Minimum Qualifications

HVAC Tech 1: • High school diploma, GED, or state-recognized equivalent • Completion of an accredited HVAC certificate or apprenticeship, HVAC program, or HVAC vocational training • EPA Section 608 Technician Certification - Universal or ability to obtain within one year of hire • Ability to lift and carry 50 pounds • Ability to climb and work from ladders, scaffolding, catwalks, and various aerial lifts in excess of 25 feet • Valid drivers license and ability to establish and maintain driver eligibility under CSU Driving and Motor Vehicle Policy

HVAC Tech 2: • High school diploma, GED, or state-recognized equivalent • Completion of an accredited HVAC certificate or apprenticeship, HVAC program • Asbestos Operations & Maintenance O&M Certification, Confined Space Certification, and Fall Protection Certification or ability to obtain certifications within one year of hire • EPA Section 608 Technician Certification - Universal • Two years of HVAC experience from an industrial contractor or an institutional complex • Experience with building automation systems (BAS) and energy management systems (EMS) • Ability to lift and carry 50 pounds • Ability to climb and work from ladders, scaffolding, catwalks, and various aerial lifts in excess of 25 feet • Valid drivers license and ability to establish and maintain driver eligibility under CSU Driving and Motor Vehicle Policy

Preferred Qualifications

HVAC Tech 1: • Verifiable completion of training courses in International Mechanical Code (IMC), HVAC, and refrigerant safety installation, repair, and maintenance (i.e., OSHA Safety) • Occupational Safety & Health Administration (OSHA) or other workplace safety certifications • Experience with building automation systems (BAS) and energy management systems (EMS) • Asbestos Operations & Maintenance O&M Certification, Confined Space Certification, and Fall Protection Certification or ability to obtain certifications within one year of hire • HVAC experience from a commercial contractor or an institutional complex

HVAC Tech 2: • Verifiable completion of training courses in International Mechanical Code (IMC), HVAC, and refrigerant safety installation, repair, and maintenance (i.e., OSHA Safety) • Occupational Safety & Health Administration (OSHA) or other workplace safety certifications • State of Ohio Boiler Operator Stationary Steam Engineer License or state-recognized equivalent • Ohio Special Boilers License • Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (KSAs)

HVAC Tech 1: • Proficiency in troubleshooting, repairing, and maintaining HVAC, refrigeration, and control systems • Knowledge of local, state, and national building maintenance and safety codes and standards (e.g., OBC, OMC, OPC, OSHA, American Society of Heating, Refrigerating, and Air-Conditioning Engineers (ASHRAE), Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) refrigerant handling) • Knowledge of specialized metering and measuring tools and equipment utilized to troubleshoot HVAC and refrigeration problems • Knowledge of new construction and repair techniques and of older building infrastructure repair techniques • Effective verbal and written communication skills and ability to work as an individual contributor and an effective team member • Ability to be dependable and punctual in reporting to work as scheduled • Strong attention to detail, ability to follow instructions, and work with minimal supervision while maintaining a high standard of safety and quality • Ability to use appropriate hand tools, power tools, and specialized equipment safely and effectively • Proficient in use of digital and mobile (i.e., phone or tablet) maintenance work order systems, email, and messaging

HVAC Tech 2: • Advanced proficiency in troubleshooting, repairing, and maintaining complex HVAC, refrigeration, and control systems • Thorough understanding of local, state, and national building maintenance and safety codes and standards (e.g., OBC, OMC, OPC, OSHA, American Society of Heating, Refrigerating, and Air-Conditioning Engineers (ASHRAE), Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) refrigerant handling) • Knowledge of specialized metering and measuring tools and equipment utilized to troubleshoot HVAC and refrigeration problems • Ability to perform field calculations for HVAC equipment • Knowledge of programming, operating, and troubleshooting building automation systems (BAS) platforms (e.g., Delta Johnson Controls) • Ability to optimize energy consumption of the campus mechanical systems • Advanced proficiency in new construction and repair techniques • Knowledge of older building infrastructure repair techniques • Ability to troubleshoot complex problems and implement effective solutions quickly • Ability to read and interpret working drawings, job specifications, technical documents, blueprints, and schematics • Effective verbal and written communication skills and ability to work as an individual contributor and an effective team member • Ability to be dependable and punctual in reporting to work as scheduled • Strong attention to detail, ability to work independently, and lead electrical projects from start to finish while maintaining high standards of safety, quality, and efficiency • Ability to use appropriate hand tools, power tools, and specialized equipment safely and effectively • Proficient in use of digital and mobile (i.e., phone or tablet) maintenance work order systems, email, and messaging
