Position Summary Information

Job Description Summary

The purpose of this position is to provide mechanical and electrical installation, maintenance, and replacement services for HVAC and refrigeration components to ensure proper safety, maintenance, and operation. This is accomplished by assessing and troubleshooting HVAC issues and repairing or replacing equipment that is not functioning properly. Other duties include communicating with contractors and departments on other repairs or on construction projects. Other duties will include minor electrical and plumbing repairs.

Minimum Qualifications

One (1) year of advanced study or training past the high school diploma or equivalency.

Three (3) years related experience.

Valid Texas Drivers License and be insurable to drive College service vehicles.

Required Job Knowledge, Skills, Abilities

Knowledge of basic mechanical concepts.

Knowledge of refrigeration theory and computation of heating and cooling loads with capacities.

Knowledge and ability to use hand tools and testing & measuring devices such as wet-dry bulb thermometers, anemometers, draft gauges, soldering irons, hand torches, leak detectors, and multi-meters.

Ability to trouble-shoot and repair commercial HVAC equipment including water-cooled chillers, cooling towers, hot-water boilers, and water distribution pumps.

Basic electrical knowledge to replace motors and make minor electrical repairs.

Basic plumbing knowledge to make minor plumbing repairs.

Ability to lift up to 50 pounds with or without accommodations.

Preferred Qualifications

Associate Degree or Trade School training in the HVAC trade.

Possess EPA "Universal" certification for handling and disposal of refrigerant.

Previous experience maintaining water-cooled chillers, cooling towers, hot-water boilers, water circulation pumps.

Previous experience with electrical and plumbing maintenance work.

Job Duty

Respond to work orders by troubleshooting, installing, repairing and maintaining heating, ventilating, and cooling equipment using necessary hand tools and testing equipment; inspect and operate air conditioning units and machinery to determine that all are functioning properly; and read thermometers and gauges and record readings.

Test efficiency of systems with instruments and make necessary adjustments to thermostatic controls and blowers to maintain adequate pressure; monitor and maintain heating and cooling plants; inspect gauges and pumps; lubricate and clean compressors, motors and moving parts; and replace filters and additives.

Maintains and repairs various electrical machinery, pumps and electronic/automated controls

Job Duty

Test large systems before placing in operation; test joints and connections according to type of refrigerant used; repair leaks and retest; drain system by vacuum pump; operate system for stated period of time and make adjustments to thermostats and valves to ensure proper control of freezing action.

Job Duty

Perform preventive maintenance on a regular schedule to ensure equipment is in good operating condition; document work performed on daily PM work orders.

Job Duty

May direct activities of HVAC Helper when helper is assigned to assist the HVAC/MEP Technician.

Job Duty

Perform minor electrical repairs including, but not limited to, replacing light switches, lamp ballasts, etc.

Perform minor plumbing repairs including, but not limited to, repair plumbing fixtures such as faucets, sinks, toilets/urinals, etc.

Job Duty

May assist other Physical Facilities Shops as directed.

Performs related work as assigned.
