Position Summary
American Mechanical Services is hiring HVAC and plumbing service technicians at multiple experience levels—from individuals with limited experience who are ready to learn, up to highly experienced technicians capable of independently diagnosing and completing complex service work.
Applicants do not need experience in both HVAC and plumbing. We are interested in:
- Entry-level HVAC or plumbing helpers
- HVAC service technicians
- Plumbing service technicians
- Experienced technicians capable of working in both trades
- Lead-level technicians who can diagnose difficult problems and assist less-experienced employees
Starting pay will be based on directly relevant experience, technical ability, licensing or certifications, and the level of work the candidate can perform independently.
Compensation
- Starting pay of $20.00–$45.00 per hour
- Entry-level or limited-experience candidates generally start near the lower end of the range
- Experienced technicians who can independently diagnose, quote, and complete service work may qualify for higher starting pay
- Top starting pay is reserved for highly qualified technicians with proven technical ability and minimal training requirements

Responsibilities
Depending on experience and assigned trade, responsibilities may include:
- Perform residential and commercial HVAC or plumbing service work.
- Assist experienced technicians while developing trade knowledge and practical skills.
- Diagnose system failures and recommend appropriate repair options.
- Perform HVAC maintenance, repairs, replacements, and system evaluations.
- Diagnose airflow, refrigerant, electrical, controls, and drainage problems.
- Perform plumbing repairs, fixture replacements, drain cleaning, water-heater work, and piping repairs.
- Identify additional problems or safety concerns and communicate them clearly.
- Explain findings and repair options honestly and professionally to customers.
- Prepare accurate material lists and job information.
- Complete detailed service reports, photographs, time entries, and required documentation.
- Obtain approval before performing additional work outside the original assignment.
- Coordinate with dispatch, management, customers, and other field personnel.
- Maintain assigned tools, equipment, materials, and company vehicles.
- Follow applicable codes, manufacturer requirements, and company procedures.
- Maintain clean, safe, and professional work areas.
- Participate in the rotating on-call schedule when qualified and assigned.
- Assist with training less-experienced employees when appropriate.
Entry-Level Candidates
We will consider candidates with limited experience who:

- Have a genuine interest in developing an HVAC or plumbing career.
- Can follow instructions and accept constructive feedback.
- Are comfortable working with tools and performing physical work.
- Understand that advancement and pay increases are based on demonstrated ability, performance, attendance, and responsibility.
- Are willing to complete technical, manufacturer, and field training.
- Communicate professionally with customers and coworkers.
- Consistently arrive on time and ready to work.
Previous construction, maintenance, mechanical, electrical, HVAC, or plumbing experience is helpful but not required for every entry-level candidate.
Experienced Technician Qualifications
Experienced applicants should possess some combination of the following:
- Residential or commercial HVAC service experience.
- Residential or commercial plumbing service experience.
- Ability to diagnose problems without constant supervision.
- Ability to read wiring diagrams, equipment manuals, plans, or specifications.
- Experience with refrigerant systems, electrical diagnostics, motors, controls, airflow, and combustion equipment.
- Experience with water heaters, fixtures, pumps, drain systems, piping, leak diagnosis, and plumbing repairs.
- Ability to estimate repair requirements and communicate accurate findings.
- Understanding of applicable trade codes and safe work practices.
- EPA Section 608 certification for HVAC refrigerant work.
- Plumbing license, HVAC certification, or other trade credentials are helpful but not required for every position.
- Experience with boilers, commercial equipment, generators, mini-splits, VRF systems, or controls is a plus.
General Requirements
- Valid driver’s license and an acceptable driving record.
- Ability to pass applicable background, motor-vehicle-record, and drug screenings.
- Reliable attendance and dependable transportation to the assigned reporting location.
- Ability to work throughout Charleston and the surrounding Lowcountry.
- Ability to safely use ladders, hand tools, power tools, and trade equipment.
- Ability to work in attics, crawl spaces, mechanical rooms, outdoor conditions, and other typical service environments.
- Ability to lift and carry equipment and materials appropriate to the position.
- Willingness to follow company safety, documentation, and customer-service standards.
- Professional appearance and communication.
- Ability to use a smartphone or tablet for dispatching, reports, photographs, and job documentation.

Schedule and Location
