Human Resources Manager
Goodwill Industries of Central Michigan's Heartland is seeking a hands-on, experienced Human Resources Manager to help lead the day-to-day execution of HR across our mission-driven organization.
This is not a narrow HR administrative role. This is a practical, people-centered HR leadership position for someone who can move confidently between employee relations, payroll processes, investigations, training, compliance, HR systems, supervisor support, culture, and process improvement.
The Human Resources Manager will report to the Vice President of Human Resources and Training and serve as a key operational leader within the HR department. This role is designed to help strengthen consistency, accountability, communication, compliance, and employee experience across the organization.
What You'll Do
The Human Resources Manager will help ensure that HR work is executed accurately, consistently, and with strong follow-through. Key responsibilities include:
- Leading day-to-day HR operations and supporting the execution of core HR processes.
- Providing practical HR guidance to supervisors and employees.
- Supporting payroll-related processes, including timekeeping review, supervisor approvals, data accuracy, corrections, and related audits.
- Serving as a primary resource for HRIS and LMS administration (currently UKG), reporting, training assignments, and system accuracy.
- Supporting employee relations matters, workplace concerns, documentation, performance conversations, corrective action, and investigations.
- Conducting or assisting with fact-based workplace investigations while maintaining confidentiality, professionalism, and appropriate escalation.
- Supporting training design, coordination, facilitation, tracking, and evaluation.
- Helping improve onboarding, supervisor training, compliance training, safety training, and employee development practices.
- Supporting benefits, leave administration, unemployment, workers' compensation, safety, and related HR processes.
- Monitoring and supporting HR compliance, including FMLA, FLSA, EEO, OSHA, workers' compensation, unemployment, VETS-4212, and related requirements.
- Supporting Source America, AbilityOne, CARF, and other compliance-related readiness efforts.
- Partnering with leaders and supervisors to identify process gaps, recurring issues, training needs, and opportunities to improve employee experience.
- Supporting recruiting, hiring, onboarding, and retention efforts for assigned areas as needed.
- Helping build a professional, respectful, accountable, and service-oriented workplace culture.
What We're Looking For
We are looking for an HR professional who is steady, organized, approachable, and able to balance people, process, and compliance. The right candidate will be comfortable handling details while also seeing the bigger picture, while leading a team.
The ideal candidate will bring:
- At least five years of progressively responsible Human Resources experience.
- Experience supporting multiple HR functions such as employee relations, payroll processes, training, recruiting, onboarding, leave administration, benefits support, workers' compensation, compliance, and HR operations.
- Experience providing guidance to supervisors on documentation, performance, attendance, conduct, corrective action, and employee support.
- Experience conducting or supporting workplace investigations.
- Strong comfort with HR systems, reporting, data accuracy, and process improvement.
- HRIS experience required; UKG experience preferred.
- LMS experience preferred.
- Experience developing or facilitating training in person and/or virtually.
- Working knowledge of employment laws and HR compliance requirements.
- Strong communication, judgment, confidentiality, organization, and follow-through.
- The ability to operate with independence while knowing when to escalate appropriately.
- SHRM or HRCI certification preferred.
- Bachelor's degree in Human Resources, Business, Organizational Development, or a related field preferred.
- Must provide own transportation and adequate insurance.
- Must maintain a valid driver's license and a driving record acceptable to Goodwill's liability carrier.
- Must be able to travel to agency locations as needed.
- Must be able to maintain strict confidentiality and professional standards in all HR matters.
Who Will Succeed in This Role
This role is a strong fit for someone who:
- Likes making HR processes work better.
- Can be both supportive and direct.
- Is comfortable coaching supervisors through real workplace issues.
- Can handle sensitive employee matters with professionalism and discretion.
- Understands that payroll, benefits, documentation, training, investigations, systems, and culture are all connected.
- Can move between strategic priorities and tactical execution without losing momentum.
- Enjoys building structure, improving consistency, and helping employees and supervisors succeed.
