Amsted Rail is seeking a Human Resources Generalist to support the People Development Program for salaried and hourly employees. This role manages payroll preparation, documentation, distribution, reconciliation, and timekeeping system administration. The Generalist will assess organizational needs, recommend and implement targeted training solutions to improve effectiveness, and support special projects as needed. This on-site position is based at our Granite City, IL plant and reports to the Sr. Manager, Human Resources.

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide Assistance to Human Resource Manager
  • Employee Relations- employee education and guidance on HR policies/processes
  • Administration of managing reports, daily report outs, Intermittent and FMLA LOAs, Layoffs, Personnel change notices, job bids
  • Preparation of disciplinary write ups/employee correspondence
  • Maintain employee E-files
  • Coordinate employee recognition and Value of Person (VOP) events
  • Assist with hourly recruitment and onboarding
  • HR special projects
  • Payroll
  • Reviews payroll calculations and deductions for accuracy
  • Updates payroll and timekeeping records, processing routine employee changes
  • Performs payroll reconciliations and audits each pay cycle
  • Adheres to payroll procedures, policies, and confidentiality requirements and file retention guidelines
  • Responds to payroll-related inquiries from employees, HR, and Finance
  • Research and resolves payroll errors or discrepancies
  • Other duties as assigned

Job Knowledge/Skills and Experience

  • Four (4) year college degree or equivalent training
  • Bachelor’s degree in Human Resource Management preferred
  • 2-4 years of related experience
  • Union experience required
  • Excellent organizational skills, attention to detail and time management skills
  • Excellent verbal and written communications
  • Highly proficient in computer skills and technology, Microsoft Office Suite proficiency, specifically Excel and SAP or other financial software
  • Ability to multi-task and work under various conditions that may include frequent interruptions
  • Experience using MY Pro UKG, Workforce Management or a similar HRIS system
  • Knowledge of wage withholding orders
  • Knowledge of Human Resource activities including employment processes concerning recruitment and orientation, collective bargaining, benefits administration, equal employment opportunity practices, labor relations, grievance resolution process, Human Resource policies and other applicable state and federal regulations

Key Challenges

  • Managing multiple priorities and deadlines in a fast-paced manufacturing environment
  • Ensuring accuracy and compliance in payroll administration while navigating frequent changes, union requirements, and complex employee inquiries
  • Coordinating and communicating effectively across diverse employee groups (hourly, salaried, union, and non-union) to support people development initiatives and organizational change

The base salary range for this position is $70,000 to $90,000. The exact salary will vary based on factors such as experience, skills, education, and location. In addition to base salary, this role is eligible for participation in a competitive bonus program based on individual and company performance.
