Duties and Responsibilities Loyola University Chicago (LUC) seeks a dynamic temporary HR Director with a proven track record of success. This is a temporary position established to provide executive and operational leadership for the delivery of Human Resources programs during a period of organizational transition. The role advances the mission, values, and strategic priorities of the University while ensuring continuity of operations.

As a key leadership position within the Human Resources division, the HR Director provides senior-level guidance to university leaders on the implementation of HR programs and initiatives. Reporting to and collaborating closely with the Chief Human Resources Officer (CHRO), the Interim HR Director drives people excellence and plays a vital role in organizational and workforce strategic planning while fostering a culture that is engaging, collaborative, and welcoming.

The HR Director oversees the development and performance of HR Managers and staff and ensures compliance with all applicable state, federal, and university regulations. This role leads and supports employee relations, talent management, talent acquisition, onboarding, policy administration, grievance resolution, and employee engagement initiatives, assuming direct responsibility when necessary. The HR Director works collaboratively with senior leaders, faculty, staff, and administrative units across the Universitys Chicagoland campuses and the John Felice Rome Center in Italy to ensure consistent high-quality HR service delivery and institutional alignment throughout the duration of the temporary appointment.

This position is established to support Human Resources operations during the Universitys ERP implementation and is effective through July 1, 2027. The role is based on-site and serves as a key resource to managers and staff during this period of organizational transition.

Strategic Leadership & Institutional Partnership • Analyze organizational risks and long-term workforce impacts. • Provide senior-level counsel to university leadership. • Represent Human Resources on university-wide committees, task forces, and governance bodies. • Promote visibility and in-person collaboration of HR leadership across campuses.

Employee Relations Compliance & Risk Management • Lead and support HR Managers in employee relations investigations, grievance resolution, and conflict management for unionized and non-unionized staff, assuming direct responsibility when necessary. • Serve as the primary point of contact for Employee Relations Compliance and Risk Management matters for an assigned portfolio of stakeholders, schools, and teams. • Ensure compliance with federal, state, and university regulations. • Maintain current knowledge of employment law and institutional policy. • Support managers in disciplinary actions, terminations, and workplace ethics matters. • Promote consistent and equitable application of HR policies. • Serve as a Subject Matter Expert on full cycle ADA claim management.

Talent Management & Organizational Development • Promote inclusive recruitment and retention practices. • Create a culture of continuous development through Loyolas Leadership Essentials Program. • Direct and oversee the Talent Acquisition Operations and Onboarding team. • Strengthen leadership capacity across academic and administrative units.

Operational Excellence & Program Oversight • Oversee HR analytics reporting and performance measurement. • Utilize workforce data to guide institutional decision-making. • Lead special HR projects and institutional initiatives. • Monitor and enhance operational efficiency across HR functions.

Stakeholder & Relationship Management • Build and maintain strong partnerships with faculty, staff, administrators, and senior leaders. • Gather and respond to feedback to improve HR services. • Assess stakeholder needs and provide strategic HR support. • Serve as a trusted advisor across the University community.

People Leadership & Team Development • Lead, mentor, and develop HR Managers, Generalists, Specialists, Student Workers, and support staff. • Establish clear performance expectations and accountability structures. • Support professional growth through coaching, training, and evaluation. • Foster a collaborative service-oriented culture.

Minimum Education and/or Work Experience • Bachelors degree in Human Resources, Business Administration, Industrial/Organizational Psychology, or a related field required. • Minimum of 10 years of progressive Human Resources experience. • Minimum of 5 years of experience managing professional staff and teams.

Qualifications • Bachelors degree in Human Resources, Business Administration, Industrial/Organizational Psychology, or a related field required. • Minimum of 10 years of progressive Human Resources experience. • Minimum of 5 years of experience managing professional staff and teams. • Demonstrated expertise in employee relations investigations, organizational development, labor relations, staffing, workforce planning, HR analytics, compensation, and policy administration. • Proven experience implementing strategic initiatives and managing complex projects from inception to completion. • Strong knowledge of federal, state, and university employment laws and regulations. • Exceptional interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills. • Demonstrated ability to exercise sound judgment, critical thinking, and problem-solving skills. • Executive presence with the ability to influence and collaborate across all levels of the organization. • Strong service orientation and proven relationship-building skills. • Ability to work independently in a fast-paced complex environment while managing confidential information with discretion. • Experience in higher education, public sector, and/or unionized environments preferred. • PHR/SPHR certification preferred but not required. • Ability to serve as a Subject Matter Expert on full cycle ADA claim management.

Computer Skills • Proficiency in HR information systems and applicant tracking systems (e.g., PeopleAdmin enterprise systems related to ERP platforms). • Advanced use of Microsoft Office applications (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook). • Experience with data reporting tools, collaboration platforms (e.g., Microsoft Teams, Zoom), and HR analytics systems is required.
