The Position
This current recruitment is for the Engineering Division of Public Works. Applicants may be considered for other Departments within the City.
The Hourly City Worker is an unclassified, temporary, non-civil service, hourly, part-time position with no medical, dental or accrued leave benefits, with the exception of AB1522 - Healthy Workplace Healthy Family Act.
Under the direct supervision of the Assistant Director of Public Works/City Engineer or a designated section supervisor, the Hourly City Worker provides general clerical, administrative, and technical support across the various sections of the Engineering Division, including Engineering Administration, Right-of-Way Permitting & Inspection, Land Development, Design/Capital Improvement Program (CIP), Traffic, Parking Services, and Facilities/CIP. Assignments may rotate among sections based on operational needs.

Essential functions of the job include, but are not limited to, the following:
Ensures Department services are provided with exceptional customer service and the highest level of ethical standards.
Provides general clerical, administrative, and technical support to staff across the various sections of the Engineering Division.
Assists with front-counter and public-counter operations, responding to inquiries from the public, applicants, contractors, and other City departments in person, by telephone, and by email.
Assists with the intake, logging, routing, and tracking of permit applications, plan checks, and related submittals.
Scans, files, organizes, and maintains engineering plans, permits, maps, project records, and other documents in both physical and electronic recordkeeping systems.
Performs data entry and helps compile, update, and maintain spreadsheets, databases, logs, and tracking systems.
Assists in preparing correspondence, reports, memoranda, presentations, and other written materials from brief instructions.
Provides basic field support as needed, such as delivering or retrieving documents and assisting inspection, survey, or technical staff.
Drives on City business.
Assumes responsibility for ensuring the duties of the position are performed in a safe, efficient manner.
Performs other related duties as assigned or as the situation requires.
Minimum Requirements
An equivalent combination of experience and education sufficient to perform the essential job functions and provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying.
Experience
Two years of experience performing general office, clerical, administrative, or customer service work is required. Experience in a public works, engineering, construction, planning, or municipal government setting is highly desirable.
Education/Training
High School Diploma or equivalent is required.
College-level coursework or training in engineering, drafting, geographic information systems (GIS), construction, public or business administration, or a closely related field is desirable.
License(s)/Certification(s)
Valid Class C California drivers license is required.

Selection Process
