Position Details

Position Overview:

The Hospice Volunteer Coordinator is responsible for the recruitment, training, and supervision of the volunteer component of hospice services to terminally ill patients and serves as a member of the interdisciplinary group.

Essential Job Functions:

  • Recruits and screens applicants for volunteer services in the area of patient support/respite service, bereavement support, or administrative support.
  • Oversees and provides comprehensive volunteer training.
  • Assesses patient/family/caregiver for volunteer needs and makes appropriate assignment of volunteers.
  • Makes initial joint visit with volunteer to introduce volunteer services to the patient/family/caregiver, completes the Volunteer Activity Plan.
  • Collaborates with the interdisciplinary team in the implementing, review, and revision of the patient's/family's plan of care and assists in the determination of volunteer needs.
  • Supervises all aspects of the volunteer program; scheduling, monitoring appropriateness of patient care assignments, and completing probationary and annual performance evaluations.
  • Monitors and updates volunteer personnel files as needed.
  • Oversees completion of monthly reports required for: review of program status, verification of volunteer hours, and percentage of volunteer utilization vs. direct labor hours.
  • Coordinates or provides continuing education for volunteers.
  • Conducts volunteer support meetings as needed.
  • Supports quality improvement efforts through participation in quality improvement activities as requested.
  • Attends in-services and continuing education activities.
  • Interfaces with the patient/family/caregiver, the hospice team, other health care providers in a respectful, professional and courteous manner.
  • Acts as a community liaison, providing community education on hospice philosophy and volunteer services.
  • Maintains sound privacy and security practices and prevents privacy or security breaches. If breach occurs, takes corrective action.

Requirements:

  • Baccalaureate or Masters Degree in Counseling, Social Work, Education, or related field.
  • Two years experience in the area of volunteerism, death and dying, bereavement or related area. Prefer previous exposure to hospice services.
  • Excellent time management skills, and communication skills.
  • Valid CPR
