The Honors College is an academic and support hub for academically motivated UNC Charlotte undergraduates, including all members of honors programs, merit scholars and students seeking endorsement for nationally competitive awards.
Primary Purpose of Position
To advise incoming and first-year University Honors Program (UHP) students and coordinate co-curricular programming for honors students and merit scholars. This position is committed to engaging honors students in personal development and self-assessment, orienting them in the requirements and expectations of UHP. Students are expected to develop plans to complete honors coursework and co-curricular requirements. This individual ensures that all honors students students have access to accurate and relevant information about the Honors College, UHP, and relevant campus resources so that they can take initiative and responsibility for their success. This position provides relevant, developmental, enriching co-curricular programming for honors students. This individual upholds the expectations and standards of advising at Charlotte in a professional and respectful manner that reflects an appreciation for students from all backgrounds. This advisor works as a team member with the Honors College staff; reports to and fulfills other responsibilities as needed and assigned by the Associate Dean of the Honors College.
Summary of Position Responsibilities
Advising: Advise incoming and first-year University Honors Program (UHP) students, onboarding and orienting the incoming UHP cohort, providing incoming and first-year students with information about curricular and co-curricular UHP requirements, and directing students toward competitive fellowships advising and toward resources as needed on campus (e.g., Counseling and Psychological Services; Dean of Students Oce). Work with UHP Student Ambassadors to support honors recruiting and program events. The advisor must have a commitment to student success and the ability to listen and analyze academic needs.
Programming & Collaboration: Plan, organize and deliver student co-curricular programming to all honors and merit scholars, particularly UHP students. Programming includes honors workshops, community service, honors events, honors award ceremonies, and participation at honors conferences. Involves collaboration with the Honors College team, including the UHP Student Association. Some night and weekend activities and some conference travel with students. The advisor must have the ability to work autonomously in a complex, team-oriented unit while also building strong alliances with faculty and campus partners that support the holistic development of students.
Administration: Administrative duties include maintaining accurate advising records, preparing an area budget, assisting with planning and attending staff meetings and the fall retreat, supporting the planning and stang of recruiting events, New Student Orientation, Open House, Admitted Students Day, conducting student programming assessments and producing material for the annual report in the spring. Working with Honors College staff, maintain accurate records for onboarding new UHP students, maintain accurate participation records for audits of UHP students. Submit list of UHP students eligible for honors housing.
