ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
Foster positive relationships with Hmong students, families, and school staff by serving as a cultural liaison and trusted resource.
Assist Hmong families in understanding the educational system, school procedures, student services, and available district and community resources.
Increase family awareness of educational programs, special education services, academic supports, extracurricular opportunities, and parent engagement activities.
Serve as the primary Hmong interpreter and translator for the district by providing accurate oral interpretation and written translation between Hmong and English.
Interpret during Individualized Education Program (IEP) meetings, parent-teacher conferences, disciplinary meetings, manifestation determinations, expulsion hearings, Section 504 meetings, enrollment appointments, and other district meetings as needed.
Translate a variety of district documents including newsletters, forms, handbooks, report cards, school communications, notices, consent forms, procedural safeguards, and other educational materials.
Communicate school information, expectations, and student progress to families while helping resolve misunderstandings and removing communication barriers.
Assist school psychologists, school social workers, special education staff, counselors, and administrators by interpreting during evaluations, interviews, meetings, and other student support activities.
Serve as a resource to principals, teachers, counselors, secretaries, administrators, and other district staff regarding effective communication with Hmong families.
Respond to emergency situations by assisting with communication between the school and families, including helping explain student illness, safety concerns, or other urgent matters.
Maintain confidentiality of student, family, and district information in accordance with federal, state, and district requirements.
Maintain accurate records of interpretation, translation, and family engagement activities as required.
Participate in professional development to maintain and strengthen interpreting, translation, cultural competency, and family engagement skills.
Perform other duties as assigned by the administrator.
