POSITION SUMMARY:

Reporting to the Manager of Laboratory Operations, the Histology Supervisor is responsible for daily operational, technical, quality, equipment, and personnel management of Sampled’s Histology Laboratory. This role oversees all histology activities supporting pharmaceutical, biotechnology, academic, and government research programs, including tissue processing, embedding, microtomy, routine and special staining, slide preparation, digital pathology workflows, and biospecimen management.

Significant focus is required on ensuring compliance with CAP, GCLP, and applicable regulatory requirements, client specifications and internal quality standards.

The Supervisor will provide leadership for laboratory staff, drive continuous process improvement initiatives, support business development efforts, and ensure delivery of high-quality results within established turnaround times.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

Laboratory Operations

  • Direct and oversee daily histology laboratory operations.
  • Manage tissue accessioning, fixation, processing, embedding, microtomy, H&E staining, special stains, slide preparation, and associated workflows.
  • Ensure laboratory activities meet client specifications, quality standards, and turnaround time commitments.
  • Monitor laboratory capacity, workflow efficiency, and resource allocation.
  • Coordinate sample receipt, storage, retrieval, and chain-of-custody activities with biorepository operations.
  • Develop and implement laboratory metrics, KPIs, and operational dashboards.

· Manage laboratory equipment, including routine maintenance, calibration, troubleshooting, and service coordination, with preventive maintenance and related documentation completed in compliance with CAP, GCLP, and applicable regulatory requirements.

Quality and Regulatory Compliance

  • Ensure compliance with CAP, GCLP, OSHA, and applicable regulatory requirements.
  • Maintain laboratory SOPs, work instructions, forms, and controlled documentation.
  • Lead investigations involving deviations, non-conformances, CAPAs, and client inquiries.
  • Support internal audits, client audits, CAP inspections, and regulatory assessments.
  • Ensure appropriate quality control procedures are implemented and documented.

Leadership

  • Recruit, train, mentor, and evaluate histology laboratory personnel.
  • Establish staffing plans to support business growth and client demands.
  • Foster a culture of scientific excellence, accountability, collaboration, and continuous improvement.
  • Conduct performance evaluations and professional development planning.

Method Development and Validation

  • Lead implementation and validation of new histology services and technologies.
  • Support development of new tissue-based workflows and capabilities.
  • Design and execute validation studies for instrumentation, reagents, and laboratory processes.
  • Prepare validation protocols, reports, and supporting documentation.

Client and Project Support

  • Serve as a technical subject matter expert for histology-related client projects.
  • Participate in client meetings, technical discussions, project planning, and proposal development.
  • Support business development activities by providing technical expertise and laboratory capabilities information.
  • Collaborate with project management teams to ensure successful project execution.

Financial and Resource Management

  • Manage laboratory budgets, capital equipment planning, and reagent inventories.
  • Evaluate and implement new technologies to improve efficiency and service offerings.
  • Monitor laboratory productivity and utilization metrics.

POSITION REQUIREMENTS:

Essential

  • Bachelor’s degree in Histotechnology, Biological Sciences, Medical Laboratory Science, or related discipline required. Master’s degree or higher in a relevant scientific discipline preferred.
  • HT or HTL (ASCP) certification required or actively pursuing certification with expected completion within 6-12 months.
  • Minimum 3 years of progressive histology laboratory experience.
  • Previous supervisory or management experience preferred.
  • Demonstrated experience in tissue processing, embedding, microtomy, routine staining, special stains, and slide preparation.
  • Experience operating within regulated laboratory environments.
  • Strong understanding of laboratory quality systems and quality management principles.
  • Able to motivate and inspire team members, with confidence and sensitivity. Effectively apply interpersonal skills to be able to interact with a range of people including customers, vendors, colleagues, prospects, in a broad range of circumstances. Demonstrates patience, emotional stability, flexibility, and a strong sense of integrity and trust. Capable in handling or managing conflicts effectively. Able to lead and manage change.
  • Strong planning skills with demonstrated ability to set priorities aligning with Sampled goals. Strong organizational skills including ability to plan and organize workload of self and the team with the ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced client-driven environment.

  • Capable of communicating with team members on both technical or complex topics, to laboratory and non-technical audiences. Confident to transparently communicate and escalate issues in a timely manner.
  • Good level of commercial and financial acumen.
  • Proficiency with laboratory information management systems (LIMS) and quality management systems.

Desirable

  • Experience supporting pharmaceutical, biotechnology, CRO, biobank, or translational research programs.
  • Experience with digital pathology platforms and whole-slide imaging systems.
  • Experience supporting CAP-accredited laboratories and research environments.

Salary range $80,000 to $95,000. Salary level will be reflective of qualifications, skills and experience.
