Job Summary

The Anatomic Pathology Supervisor is responsible for the overall planning, coordination, evaluation, and supervision of technical and operational activities within the Anatomic Pathology department. This role oversees daily operations, staff performance, quality assurance programs, regulatory compliance, and departmental objectives to ensure the delivery of accurate, timely, and high-quality pathology services. The Supervisor also supports process improvement initiatives, inspection readiness, personnel development, and the implementation of new technologies and testing methodologies.


Operational Leadership

  • Oversee routine histology functions, including tissue processing, embedding, microtomy, staining, and related workflows.
  • Manage daily department operations and supervise technical and support staff.
  • Monitor specimen examination and test analysis activities to ensure quality and accuracy standards are maintained.
  • Establish departmental standards, policies, and procedures to promote operational efficiency.
  • Review case reports and images for accuracy and completeness prior to final review.
  • Ensure timely resolution of operational issues, abnormal findings, and client inquiries.

Quality & Regulatory Compliance

  • Develop, implement, and monitor quality assurance and quality control programs.
  • Ensure compliance with applicable regulatory, accreditation, and safety requirements.
  • Monitor quality metrics and implement corrective actions when necessary.
  • Maintain inspection readiness and coordinate regulatory inspections.
  • Ensure departmental procedures and documentation accurately reflect current practices.
  • Promote and maintain a safe working environment and adherence to safety protocols.

Staff Leadership & Development

  • Lead recruitment, interviewing, hiring, onboarding, training, coaching, and development of department personnel.
  • Conduct performance evaluations and provide ongoing feedback and performance improvement planning.
  • Ensure staff competency through training programs, competency assessments, and compliance with standard operating procedures.
  • Monitor staffing levels and resource utilization to meet productivity and service goals.

Strategic & Financial Management

  • Analyze workload statistics, productivity metrics, and budget reports to optimize operations.
  • Evaluate and recommend new equipment, technologies, vendors, and testing methodologies.
  • Set departmental objectives, monitor performance, and implement improvements to achieve organizational goals.
  • Present operational and performance data to leadership and stakeholders.

    Qualifications

    Education

    One of the following is preferred:

    • Bachelor's degree in Chemical, Physical, Biological Sciences, or a related field, plus applicable specialty training and experience; OR
    • Master's degree in Chemical, Physical, Biological Sciences, or a related field, with at least four years of relevant laboratory experience, including two years in a clinical laboratory setting; OR
    • Associate degree in Science or equivalent with at least two years of laboratory training or experience in high-complexity testing (where permitted by state regulations).

    Experience

    • Minimum of six (6) years of experience in a histology or anatomic pathology environment preferred.
    • Previous experience in a Lead Histotechnologist, Senior Histotechnologist, or supervisory role preferred.
    • Experience with high-complexity testing environments strongly preferred.

      Certifications & Licensure

      • HT (ASCP) or HTL (ASCP) certification required.
      • State-specific laboratory licensure may be required based on location and applicable regulations.
