The referenced pay range represents the minimum and maximum compensation for this job. Individual annual salaries/hourly rates will be set within the job's compensation range, and will be determined by considering factors including, but not limited to, market data, education, experience, qualifications, expertise of the individual, and internal equity considerations.
Responsibilities:
Processes tissue samples in a Mohs surgery unit setting for histological diagnosis by a pathologist, including grossing, embedding, microtomy, and special stains, and processes Immunohistochemistry slides. Performs maintenance on laboratory equipment, including but not limited to preventative, routine, and troubleshooting.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
- Performs histological procedures at one or more Mohs Histology locations within Dermatology. Obtains and properly logs tissue samples for testing. Embeds and sections samples, making adjustments as needed for different tissue types. Examines sections of embedded tissue under the microscope to ensure data integrity. Stains and covers slip sample slides for physician analysis. Logs patient information for data collection.
- Ensures that slides are being processed and H+E stained correctly. Reviews final results before presenting slides to the physician to ensure that the sections are complete and there are no missing epidermis or deep fat and no stain problems or freeze artifacts.
- Trains new technicians on cutting frozen sections and cryostat safety techniques. Ensures that technicians are current with their lab safety training and procedures. Maintains interpersonal relationships with techs and addresses their concerns and questions as needed.
- Ensures that all cryostats are properly working by performing preventive maintenance. Ensures that microscopes are working properly and they are serviced on an annual basis.
- Accounts for inventory and orders lab supplies for the histology lab, as needed. Ensures that supplies are readily available.
- Maintains quality assurance by obtaining peer review per departmental policy. Follows procedure to perform stain and equipment quality checks per approved policy/procedure, maintains documentation, and ensures that patient information matches on map, paper, and electronic log for quality control.
- Assists leadership the with oversight of the Mohs labs. Maintains labs license. Manages NYS audits and precepts newer employees.

MINIMUM EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE- Associate's degree required
- Previous experience as a Histology Technician preferred
- Or equivalent combination of education and experience
LICENSES AND CERTIFICATIONS- HT - Histotechnologist - Certified from ASCP certification upon hire required or
- HTL - Histo Technologist certification upon hire required or
- MLT - Medical Technician - ASCP NYS Licensure upon hire required or
- MT Medical/Clinical Laboratory Technologist NYS Licensure upon hire required
