Overview:
The Health Information Technician assures the integrity of protected health information (PHI) throughout the UF Health St. John’s Health Information System (HIS). Trains HIM staff on the electronic medical record. Works with the medical staff on record completion procedures in the Allscripts EMR. Releases PHI in accordance with the HIPAA privacy rule and Florida state statutes.
Responsibilities:
- Assumes a leadership role with the EMR and assists with training staff on the procedures, functionality and security of the Allscripts Sunrise Clinical Manager and Sunrise Record Manager.
- Analyses medical records quantitatively to assure that required reports and signatures are included in the record.
- Stays abreast of the appropriate hospital policies and medical staff rules & regulations that pertain to medical record documentation requirements in order to assure proper chart completion.
- Performs quality reviews of all documents in the electronic medical record to assure all are accurately scanned to the correct patient, visit, and form ID, and confirms that the scanned image is legible.
- Safeguards and protects the patient’s right to privacy by ensuring that only authorized individuals have access to the patient’s medical information.
- Process all requests for PHI and assures the release is in compliance with the request, authorization, Florida state statutes and HIPAA privacy regulations.
- Assists physicians with record completion procedures and verifies completion of medical reports.
- In following the HIPAA minimum necessary rule, releases information from the medical record utilizing discretion on what reports are pertinent to the request.
- Maintains complete knowledge on what information systems and documents make up the legal record and how to retrieve those documents for release of information purposes.
- Checks for properly executed authorization to release medical information in accordance with state law and HIPAA privacy standards.
- Releases psychiatric and other “super confidential” information in accordance with Florida state statutes.
Qualifications:
Education / Training
- High School Diploma/Equivalent
Preferences:
Graduate from a health information technology program or degree in the medical field highly preferred.
Experience Requirements
- 1-year Health Information Department experience
Preferences:
Experience with EMR and scannings highly preferred.
