Job Responsibilities

Operates technical specialized equipment such as boom truck and snooper truck in conjunction with highway and bridge construction/repair operations. Acts a crew leader, overseeing the crew in the absence of the specialty crew foreman. Operates equipment such as tandem dump trucks with trailers and lowboy tractor for hauling material and transporting equipment for maintenance and construction operations. Operates equipment such as excavator, motor grader, backhoe, pile driver, front end loader, skid steer, and large rollers in conjunction with highway and bridge construction/repair operations. Performs manual labor and uses small tools involved in bridge construction and repair including, but not limited to, demolition, building formwork, steel beam repair, concrete spall repair, timber/steel pile repair, painting, sand blasting, and pressure washing. Signals crane operator while performing various bridge construction/repair activities such as removing old bridge components, pile driving, and setting bridge decks. Responsible for safely rigging lifted materials and bridge components. Conducts safety inspection on all assigned vehicles and equipment. Assists with instructing crew members in safety practices such as flagging operations, wearing safety equipment, vehicle safety, or job site hazards. Coordinates placement of traffic control devices for work zones according to SCDOT Work Zone Traffic Control Manual. Operates both portable tank-mounted salt brine anti-icing equipment and standard dump truck with snow plow attachment and sand spreader to remove snow and ice from highways and bridges. Performs other related duties as assigned.

Minimum and Additional Requirements

Two and one-half (2.5) years of related work experience; or an approved acceptable equivalence. Necessary Special Requirement: A valid motor vehicle operator's license is required. Requires attainment of a Class A Commercial Drivers License (CDL) within six (6) months of placement in the position.

The physical demands for the essential functions involves bending, stooping, reaching, twisting, climbing, balancing, kneeling, pushing, pulling, and grasping. Must be able to lift up to 50 lbs. Walking for extended periods, treading rough terrain, working in close proximity to motoring traffic, and in natural environmental hazards. May be required to work outside normal scheduled work week; especially during inclement weather.
