POSITION - High School Physical Education & Health Teacher

START DATE - Beginning of 2026-27 School Year

LOCATION - Berkley High School

SALARY - Compensation will be based on the applicable provisions of the BEA Teacher Salary Schedule.

POSITION SUMMARY - The physical education/health teacher will demonstrate strong teaching skills while delivering instruction to students. The importance of physical activity and its relationship to a healthy lifestyle will be emphasized. Good sportsmanship will be taught and modeled.

QUALIFICATIONS

Candidates must:

  • Valid Michigan Teacher Certification with:

  • MC Endorsement or

  • MX Endorsement or

  • MB and MA Endorsements

  • High School teaching experience is preferred.

  • Provide concrete examples (through application materials, interviews, and references) of their passion for teaching, comprehensive mastery of their subject matter, and deep understanding of how students best learn.

  • Meet all State and Federal requirements for highly qualified status with their subject area.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Planning and Preparation

  • Plan, implement, teach, and assess a comprehensive program of study of Physical Education and Health at the high school level
  • Develop plans and organize daily lessons so that demonstration, instruction, student application, and practice are consistently addressed within the high school classroom
  • Plan and develop appropriate pre- and post-instruction assessments to evaluate each pupil's progress
  • Plan for appropriate use of materials and resources that motivate students to learn

Classroom Environment

  • Establish and maintain standards of student behavior necessary to provide an orderly and productive instructional environment conducive to teaching and learning.
  • Organize classroom space and manage classroom instruction and procedures so students know what they are expected to do and learn.
  • Create a learning environment of mutual respect and rapport that supports learning.
  • Use a variety of strategies so students enjoy an engaging, positive, and effective culture for learning.

Instruction

  • Develop and follow through on instructional plans; differentiate and modify to meet each student's specific needs.
  • Maintain an accurate record of student attendance reports, classroom grades, and all relevant/related professional duties.
  • Communicate effectively with students, parents, and colleagues regarding student expectations, achievement, and behavior.
  • Evaluate each pupil's performance, knowledge, and skills in all courses taught.
  • Instruct in a manner which balances lecture, student information sharing, discovery and inquiry and whole/small group instruction.
  • Use appropriate questioning and discussion techniques.
  • Engage students actively and meaningfully in their learning.

Professional Responsibilities

  • Participate in faculty committees, community events, student activities, and professional development programs.
  • Initiate and participate in curriculum and development activities related to the teaching and learning expectations relative to the assigned position.
  • Reflect thoughtfully on teaching practices and modify plans and strategies to improve instruction.
  • Dialogue positively with colleagues to continue professional growth.
  • Actively contribute to building and district school improvement efforts.
  • Collect and utilize student data and share with students and parents to improve outcomes.
  • Develop a process to communicate with parents and students to share progress
