POSITION: HIGH SCHOOL GYMNASTICS HEAD COACH

JOB GOAL: To instruct student-athletes in the fundamental skills, techniques, strategy, conditioning, and safety practices necessary for individual and team success in gymnastics. At the same time, the coach must instruct and model behaviors that promote good sportsmanship, self-discipline, teamwork, confidence, perseverance, leadership, and pride of accomplishment in student participants. The coach will continue to enhance their knowledge and skills through professional development opportunities such as clinics, certifications, observations, and consultation.

REPORTS TO: The activities director, who provides overall objectives and final evaluation in conjunction with the high school principal.

SUPERVISES: Assistant coaches and volunteers involved with the gymnastics program in conjunction with the Activities Director and principal.

GENERAL:

  • The success of athletic programs has a strong influence on the community's image of the entire school system. Public exposure is a considerable responsibility, and community/parent expectations for competitive performance can be demanding; however, these pressures must never override the objectives of good sportsmanship, student safety, positive character development, and student well-being.
  • The position includes other unusual aspects such as extended hours, travel, supervision responsibilities, and the inherent risk of athletic injury associated with gymnastics activities.
  • It is the express intent of this job description to provide sufficient guidance for the position. In cases not specifically covered, it shall be assumed that the coach will exercise common sense, sound judgment, and professionalism.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Has a thorough knowledge of all co-curricular and athletic policies approved by the Kaukauna Area School District (KASD) Board of Education and is responsible for their implementation within the gymnastics program.
  • Has knowledge of existing KASD and applicable WIAA/FVA regulations as they pertain to student activities and gymnastics.
  • Understands the proper administrative line of command and refers all requests or concerns through appropriate channels. Is prepared to attend mandatory Activities Department meetings.
  • Organizes and supervises all aspects of the gymnastics program, including practices, competitions, team communication, equipment oversight, and athlete supervision.
  • Develops practice plans that emphasize skill development, conditioning, safety, teamwork, and preparation for competition.
  • Teaches proper gymnastics techniques and ensures student-athletes follow appropriate safety procedures and expectations at all times.
  • Promotes and models positive sportsmanship, appropriate conduct, and respectful interactions among athletes, coaches, officials, opponents, and spectators.
  • Monitors the academic progress and eligibility of student-athletes in accordance with district and WIAA expectations.
  • Communicates effectively and professionally with student-athletes, parents/guardians, administration, and coaching staff.
  • Works collaboratively with assistant coaches and other school personnel to support student success and program growth.
  • Maintains and inventories equipment and reports maintenance or safety concerns in a timely manner.
  • Ensures that all athletes are properly supervised during practices, competitions, travel, and other team activities.
  • Encourages student participation and helps foster a positive, inclusive, and supportive team culture.
  • Represents the school and district in a positive and professional manner at all times.
