Position Summary
Salem High School is seeking a dedicated, student-centered High School Counselor who is passionate about helping students achieve academic, career, and personal success. The successful candidate will work collaboratively with administrators, teachers, parents, and community partners to ensure every student is supported in developing a plan for graduation and postsecondary success.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
The High School Counselor will:
- Provide academic, career, and social-emotional counseling to students in grades 9-12.
- Assist students in developing and monitoring graduation plans that meet Indiana diploma requirements.
- Guide students through course selection and maintain accurate four-year plans.
- Monitor student progress toward graduation and communicate concerns with students, parents, and staff.
- Coordinate scheduling and assist with the development of the school master schedule.
- Advise students regarding dual credit, Advanced Placement (AP), career pathways, Ivy Tech, Prosser Career Education Center, and postsecondary opportunities.
- Assist students with college admissions, scholarships, financial aid, military options, apprenticeships, and workforce readiness.
- Coordinate standardized testing programs including SAT, PSAT, AP, and other state-required assessments.
- Support students through individual and group counseling related to academic, behavioral, attendance, and personal concerns.
- Work collaboratively with teachers, administrators, school psychologists, social workers, and outside agencies to support student success.
- Participate in Section 504 meetings and assist with student support plans as appropriate.
- Maintain accurate student records while ensuring confidentiality in accordance with FERPA and other applicable laws.
- Assist with new student enrollment, transcript evaluations, and student withdrawals.
- Participate in crisis response and school safety planning as needed.
- Support school improvement initiatives and actively participate in Professional Learning Communities (PLCs), faculty meetings, and professional development.
- Perform other duties as assigned by the Principal.
Qualifications
- Valid Indiana School Counselor License.
- Knowledge of Indiana graduation requirements and state accountability measures.
- Strong interpersonal, organizational, and communication skills.
- Ability to build positive relationships with students, families, and staff.
- Knowledge of college admissions, financial aid, career planning, and workforce development is preferred.
Preferred Qualifications
- Previous counseling experience at the high school level.
- Familiarity with Indiana Graduation Pathways.
- Experience with scheduling, transcript evaluation, and college/career readiness programming.
- Knowledge of social-emotional learning, restorative practices, and crisis intervention.
Position Details:
- Location: Salem High School, Salem, Indiana
- Schedule: Standard school hours, 7:30 - 3:30 Monday-Friday
- Compensation: Based on experience and district salary schedule.
