Job Description

Summary

The Healthcare Student Assistant-Certified Nursing Assistant plays a key role in supporting the daily operations of the Student Health Center by assisting nursing and administrative staff in delivering high-quality, efficient, and compassionate care to students. This position provides valuable hands-on experience in a clinical setting.

Essential Functions

  • Responsible for supporting patient care operations by confirming the purpose of each visit, verifying patient information through interviews, completing clinic visit forms, obtaining vital signs, and accurately documenting all information in the Electronic Medical Record (EMR).
  • Prepares patients for healthcare visits by providing examination gowns and drapes, positioning patients appropriately for examinations or treatments, and ensuring exam rooms are properly set up with necessary instruments, supplies, and equipment.
  • Demonstrates strong organizational skills and the ability to manage multiple tasks simultaneously, including promptly responding to patient needs and effectively communicating messages to the care team.
  • Supports healthcare providers during examinations and procedures by assisting with clinical tasks such as preparing laboratory specimens, performing basic laboratory tests, and maintaining strict adherence to quality control standards. Additional clinical duties include disposing of contaminated supplies, performing electrocardiograms (EKGs), changing dressings, removing IVs, and performing venipunctures to obtain blood samples.
  • Maintains a safe and efficient clinical environment by checking expiration dates on medical supplies, removing or reporting expired items, restocking exam rooms and supply areas, and cleaning and preparing exam rooms between patients to ensure sanitation and organization.
  • Facilitates patient flow and operational efficiency by transporting patients via wheelchair to ancillary departments or the Emergency Room as directed, collecting completed paperwork from clinical pods, and delivering specimens to the Point of Care (POC) testing area.
  • Performs laboratory functions and testing at the Student Health Center in accordance with established protocols, ensuring all documentation requirements are strictly followed.
  • Completes unit- or department-specific duties as outlined in internal guidelines and communicates any incidents or concerns promptly to the supervisor through both verbal and written (email) channels.
  • Assist Nurse Supervisor with tasks as assigned.
  • Attend and participate in training sessions and meetings, as assigned.
  • As with all positions, involvement with other duties and responsibilities is expected to serve and uphold the values of the Student Health Center and the Division of Student Affairs' missions.

Anticipated Hiring Range

$17.50 per hour, paid on a biweekly basis

Shift

Approximately 10-18 hours per week. Schedule may vary from week to week.

The tentative schedule for this position will be determined based on the student's class schedule. Shifts will occur on weekdays during the Fall and Spring semesters. (typically no weekends during the academic year).

There are no scheduled shifts over Fall Break, Thanksgiving Break, Winter Break, Spring Break, or the Summer semester.

This position may require flexibility depending on demand for clinic needs. Occasionally division and campus projects may require additional hours outside of the expected schedule.

Minimum Qualifications

To be eligible for a student title, an individual must be enrolled at the University of Missouri. Enrollment in the summer session is not required if the student was enrolled in the Spring semester and is pre-enrolled for the Fall semester. Selection is contingent upon results of a review with the Office of Institutional Equity, Office of Student Accountability & Support, Office of the Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs, previous MU appointment history, and reference checks.

Required Qualifications

One of the following:

  • Certified Nursing Assistant certification (CNA) or Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) exam registration; or
  • Direct patient care experience in the past three (3) years as a medical assistant, nursing assistant, emergency medical technician, or surgical technician; or
  • Currently enrolled in University of Missouri's Unlicensed Assistive Personnel (UAP) training program; or
  • Completion within the last three (3) years of an Unlicensed Assistive Personnel (UAP) training program; or
  • Nursing licensure candidate who was unsuccessful on the state licensure examinations in the past three (3) years
