Health Technician (Optometry)

Duties:
The primary purpose of this position is to perform duties as an optometric clinical assistant in an outpatient Health Care Delivery System. The work contributes to the satisfaction with departmental services, and helps provide clear, safe and comfortable vision for patients. The work provides for smooth patient flow, from initial access to services, through dispensing or corrective lenses. It helps identify ocular and systemic health problems, and impacts decision making in prescribing corrective lenses. The individual position will also contribute to the environment of care through maintenance of a safe and supportive environment for patients, staff and other individuals served by or providing services in the organization.

This position is located within the Clinical Support Services OPTOMETRY BLDG 1523 at the CAPT James A. Lovell Federal Health Care Center (FHCC) in North Chicago, IL. The FHCC is a first-of-its-kind partnership between the Department of Veterans Affairs (DVA), and Department of Navy (DoN)/Department of Defense (DoD). It is larger than just a single facility, but rather it is a fully-integrated medical care facility with a single combined VA and Navy mission. The combined mission of the FHCC means active duty military and their family members, military retirees, and eligible veterans receive health care at this facility.

At the GS-6 level: Applicants must possess at least one year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-5 level in the federal service. Specialized experience includes but is not limited to:
Performing visual field and color testing. Measuring distance and near visual acuity. Scheduling patients and acting as a liaison to record requests. Coordinating care for clinics. OR
Substitution of education:
At the GS-6 level: Graduate education or an internship meets the specialized experience required only in those instances where it is directly related to the work of the position.
Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religions; spiritual; community; student; social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
