Health Room Assistant

Location: Mosinee Middle School

Hours: 7:30 a.m. - 3:15 p.m. (Monday - Friday when school is in session)

Training/Experience in the medical field preferred

JOB GOAL

To assist our District Nurse and Principal by providing support and appropriate care to ill and injured students and/or staff. Under the supervision of the District Nurse, maintain a safe and healthy learning environment by making medical services available on a daily basis and ensure that medically challenged students are able to attend public school. Perform other duties as requested by the Building Principal.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  • Medications
  • Upon receipt of medication, completes the Original Medication Form for the District Nurse to review and request physician signature as needed.
  • Administers daily and as needed medication to the students in accordance with the District Policy and Procedure Statements for students receiving medications at schools and on field trips.
  • Tracks expiration dates on medication and communicates supply requirements as directed.
  • Organizes medication, diabetic emergency supplies, Epi-Pens, demographic reports, and First Aid kits for field trips.
  • Ensures smooth transition from school year to Summer Learning by providing the District Nurse with copies of all Medication Consent Forms and Actions for Students Forms so that proper arrangements are well planned for Summer School.
  • Maintains confidentiality of student health information in accordance with Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA).
  • Performs Delegated Nursing Acts as directed with training received by the District Nurse.
  • Triage symptoms of illness and/or injury including evaluating, monitoring, and referring physically ill and emotionally at risk students to District Nurse or other appropriate resource.
  • Provides care and/or first aid for ill and/or injured students; monitors student's health status during rest periods and follows instructions by District Nurse.
  • Provides daily care according to students' needs including diabetic care, personal hygiene needs, urinary catheterization, colostomy care, tube feeding care, etc.
  • Maintains Health Room supplies, inventory, and cleanliness. Cleanliness includes using universal precautions when providing care, disinfecting used areas per District Standard of Practice and keeping the health room orderly and safe.
  • Prevents the transmission of blood borne pathogens.
  • Annually sends End of the Year Pick Up Letters for families; objective is to have minimal amount of medication to discard.
  • Immunizations
  • Collects and maintains student immunization data in the Regional Electronic Computerized Network (RECIN).
  • Notifies parents by phone or letter when student does not comply with the State Immunization Law.

Emergency Care

  • Provides basic emergency care for illness or injury within established District Policy and Procedures, District Health Services Guidelines and under the supervision of the District Nurse.
  • Functions as a member of the Building Emergency Response Team
  • Documentation
  • Enters health information into Infinite Campus including daily health room visits, medication administration, health conditions, medications for new and existing students, etc…
  • Keeps accurate attendance records in Infinite Campus documenting messages and communications with parents or others responsible for students' care.
  • Maintains accurate and confidential records of contacts and conversations with parents and students regarding health concerns. Informs District Nurse in a timely manner.
  • Maintains the Balance Student Roster from RECIN for the building; then run report.
  • Prepares Student Health Folders for transfers out of the building for the next school year.
  • Prepares Student Health Folders for incoming class of Kindergarten and Pre K; notify District Nurse of incoming health conditions and/or concerns.

Additional Duties

Vision/Hearing Screening Clinic- organizes documents needed, schedules volunteers, and rooms.

Supervises students while in groups such as lunchroom, recess, WIN time, etc…

Performs clerical duties and/or coverage as assigned by the building Administrator.

Collects, refills, distributes Blood Borne Pathogen Kits to staff; distributes and restocks fanny packs to Recess Associates; and distributes and restocks First Aid Kits.

Performs additional duties and responsibilities as assigned.
