EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE:
Minimum Qualifications:
1- year experience in Health Information Management (HIM) or equivalent.
JOB SUMMARY:
The Health Information Management (HIM) Technician is responsible for the day-to-day tasks required to maintain the integrity of the health record. The role of the HIM Technician is integral to the overall function of the health system and patient care, ensuring the accuracy and timeliness of available information for providers. The HIM Technician works under close supervision of the HIM Team Lead and/or HIM Manager.
JOB DUTIES:
Processes requests for the release of confidential information according to regulatory guidelines, such as HIPAA Privacy and Security Rule, Texas Health and Safety Code
Analyzes complex data for completeness and accuracy to ensure ongoing compliance with regulatory requirements, such as CMS, The Joint Commission, and the Medical Staff Bylaws, Rules, and Regulations
Assists Medical Staff in the completion of records to avoid suspension of medical staff privileges
Performs specialized and diversified clerical duties associated with the maintenance of the electronic health record
Scans/Indexes all paper and faxed documents deemed part of the legal medical record into the electronic health records system to the appropriate patient account with accuracy, timeliness, and uniformity
Requests and compiles birth certificate data as required by the State of Texas for data entry into the Texas Electronic Vital Events Registration System (TxEVER)
Maintains the integrity of the Master Patient Index
Maintains health records per current federal, state, and local laws, guidelines, and regulations that govern medical records
Identifies system deficiencies, investigates difficulties, and makes recommendations to the manager of process improvement
Maintains current working knowledge of HIM department applications and how they are used in department operations. Serves as a resource to HIM department management and staff and providers, and external departments to resolve workflow issues
Provides daily monitoring and management of work queues and monitors reports from electronic health records system
Protects the security of health records to ensure confidentiality
Marginal or Periodic Functions:
Adheres to internal controls and reporting structure
Performs related duties as required
KNOWLEDGE/SKILLS/ABILITIES:
Excellent customer service skills, written and communication skills
Maintain professional manner with patients, staff, and students
Ability to multitask in a high-paced work environment
Bilingual preferred (English/Spanish)
WORKING ENVIRONMENT:
Standard hospital, clinical, and/or office environment. Fast-paced environment with fluctuating workloads. Must be able to stand and walk for extended periods, including moving between units.
SALARY RANGE:
Actual salary commensurate with experience.
WORK SCHEDULE:
On-site, full-time position. Primary schedule is Wednesday through Sunday, 8:00 AM - 4:30 PM. Workdays may be modified as necessary to support departmental operations. This position requires working holidays; the office is closed only on Christmas Day.
