Position: Head Cross Country Coach - Middle School
The Head Cross Country Coach is responsible for leading, organizing, and coaching the middle school Cross Country program. The position emphasizes skill development, teamwork, sportsmanship, and academic balance, preparing student-athletes for interscholastic competition and future participation at the high school level. The coach will serve as a positive role model and mentor while fostering a love for running.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Evaluates players' abilities to maximize individual and team success. Plans and conducts effective practices focused on technical, tactical, physical, and mental growth.
Leads the middle school cross country program and collaborates with varsity and junior varsity coaches to ensure consistency and alignment of philosophy, terminology, and player development throughout the program.
Teaches and demonstrates proper running techniques, rules, and strategies to individuals and groups. Adjusts instruction based on progress and team needs.
Develops and implements running strategies based on team strengths and opponent analysis. Promotes positive sportsmanship and teamwork during competition.
Provides proper supervision of athletes during practices, meets, and team events. Follows district and VHSL (Virginia High School League) guidelines and established procedures in the event of an injury.
Maintains open communication with players, parents/guardians, and school staff regarding expectations, schedules, and player development. Holds pre- and post-season meetings as appropriate.
Oversees the care, maintenance, and inventory of uniforms, equipment, and field spaces. Ensures all resources are used safely and responsibly.
Models integrity, fairness, and respect toward players, officials, opponents, and spectators. Adheres to all school, district, and state athletic policies and promotes a culture of inclusivity and sportsmanship.
Attends all required coaches' meetings and completes necessary documentation related to eligibility, schedules, and program management.
Minimum Qualifications
Demonstrated knowledge of soccer rules, techniques, and game strategies.
Effective coaching, communication, and leadership skills.
Ability to establish positive working relationships with student-athletes, parents, and school staff.
Commitment to the academic and personal growth of student-athletes.
Must meet district and Virginia coaching certification requirements, including current CPR/First Aid/AED certification and concussion management training.
