Objective: Under general supervision of the Recreation Programmer and the Aquatics Supervisor. The Head Guard is responsible for assisting in the planning, promotion, development, coordination and supervision of aquatic facilities, programs, and staff.
Relationships: Reports to: Aquatics Supervisor and the Recreation Programmer (in absence of Aquatics Supervisor) Works with seasonal employees on a regular basis and communicates with other division employees, professional staff, lifeguards, pool patrons, and the public. Supervises: Lifeguards, concessions and cashiers

Assists with the daily operation and supervision of aquatics facilities in accordance with city policies, pool policies, and Wisconsin Pool Code by following proper chemical handling and water testing procedures;
Maintaining a clean bathhouse, pool, and deck areas;
Assisting in decisions regarding opening and closing of the pool;
Enforcing all policies and procedures outlined in the Aquatics Head Guard Manual and Aquatics Lifeguard Manual;
Evaluating facility conditions while making recommendations for improved maintenance.
Supervises and trains aquatics staff by directing, supervising, training, and evaluating lifeguards, instructors, and cashiers/concession attendants in the absence of the Aquatics Supervisor and assisting while on duty in their presence;
Assisting with the preparation of monthly staff schedules;
Supporting in-service training for all aquatics staff;
Handling disciplinary matters and reporting them to the Aquatics Supervisor and/or Recreation Programmer;
Assisting concessions staff with daily operations.
Ensures proper discipline and emergency care by monitoring lifeguards and providing coverage as needed;
Leading and directing staff during emergencies in accordance with the Emergency Action Plan;
Addressing patron behavior issues consistently and professionally according to established policies.
Plans and organizes special events by assisting the Aquatics Supervisor with program and event scheduling;
Organizing staff and volunteers for special activities;
Evaluating programs while making recommendations for improvements to enhance participant experience and operational effectiveness.
Communicates effectively with pool patrons, lifeguards, the Aquatics Supervisor, and the Recreation Programmer by answering questions, complaints, and inquiries;
Documenting and reporting staff and patron issues;
Recording equipment in need of repair;
Attending all required supervisor meetings and trainings.
Maintains accurate and complete facility records by tracking daily attendance and program participation;
Keeping employee records updated;
Fully documenting incidents and operational problems;
Reviewing and approving employee timecards weekly and submitting them as required;
Completing accurate nightly deposits and securing funds in the safe.
