Salary
Salary shall be based upon the approved Boone County Schools supplemental salary schedule and applicable West Virginia State Code.
General Responsibilities
The Head Cross Country Coach is responsible for organizing, directing, and supervising the school's cross country program. The coach shall promote academic success, sportsmanship, discipline, leadership, and athletic development while ensuring the safety and well-being of all student-athletes.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Organize and supervise all aspects of the cross country program including practices, meets, conditioning, and team activities.
- Develop training programs designed to improve endurance, strength, conditioning, and competitive performance.
- Instruct student-athletes in proper running techniques, stretching, nutrition, and injury prevention.
- Promote good sportsmanship, teamwork, discipline, and respect among athletes, coaches, officials, and spectators.
- Ensure compliance with all policies and regulations of Boone County Schools, the West Virginia Secondary School Activities Commission, and applicable state and federal laws.
- Monitor student eligibility and encourage academic achievement among team members.
- Maintain accurate records including inventories, schedules, eligibility paperwork, transportation requests, and meet results.
- Supervise assistant coaches and coordinate responsibilities within the program.
- Communicate effectively with parents, athletes, administration, and community members.
- Coordinate transportation, uniforms, equipment, and meet logistics.
- Attend required athletic meetings, trainings, and professional development sessions.
- Ensure proper care, storage, and accountability of school equipment and uniforms.
- Establish and maintain a safe practice and competition environment.
- Assist with offseason conditioning and student recruitment efforts in accordance with WVSSAC regulations.
- Represent Boone County Schools and the athletic program in a professional manner at all times.
- Perform other duties related to the athletic program as assigned by the Principal or Athletic Director.
Qualifications
- High school diploma or equivalent required.
- Valid West Virginia coaching authorization or certification as required by the WVSSAC.
- Current CPR/First Aid certification preferred or required by county policy.
- Prior coaching or competitive running experience preferred.
- Ability to work effectively with students, staff, parents, and community members.
- Demonstrated knowledge of cross country rules, conditioning, and athlete development.
Physical Demands
- Ability to stand and walk for extended periods of time.
- Ability to run short distances and demonstrate athletic techniques when necessary.
- Ability to work outdoors in varying weather conditions.
- Ability to lift and carry equipment related to athletic activities.
Evaluation
Performance shall be evaluated by the Principal and Athletic Director in accordance with Boone County Schools policy and procedures.
