Head Coach

The Head Coach is responsible for leading all aspects of their respective NCAA sport program, including recruiting, training, and mentoring student athletes to achieve success in competition, academics, and personal development. This position requires a strong commitment to fostering a culture of excellence, integrity, sportsmanship, and inclusion. In addition to coaching responsibilities, the role includes administrative duties that support the broader operations and initiatives of the athletic department, assigned based on the candidate's experience and strengths. This dual responsibility provides an opportunity to contribute strategically to departmental goals while building a successful, values driven, and student centered athletic program.

Job Duties

  • Interacts with co-workers, visitors, and other staff consistent with the values of Jefferson.
  • Safety, Risk Management, and Operational Proficiency: Demonstrated ability to ensure a safe training and competitive environment by applying sport-specific safety protocols, emergency procedures, and risk-management practices. Competent in the safe use, maintenance, and oversight of all equipment, facilities, and training environments relevant to the sport. Committed to safeguarding the wellbeing of student-athletes and staff in varied conditions and competitive contexts.
  • Technical Sport Expertise: In-depth understanding of the sport's technical, tactical, and strategic components, including athlete development, practice design, performance evaluation, and overall program management. Ability to implement training methodologies that support skill progression, competitive excellence, and long-term program success.
  • Recruiting Expertise: Proven ability to identify and recruit talented student-athletes who align with the program's values and academic standards.
  • Effective Communication: Excellent verbal and written communication skills for engaging with student-athletes, colleagues, alumni, and other stakeholders.
  • Teamwork and Collaboration: Ability to work effectively within a collaborative athletic department and contribute to the institution's broader mission.
  • Commitment to Student-Athlete Success: Dedication to supporting student-athletes' academic, personal, and professional development.
  • Technological Proficiency: Competence with software and tools related to program management, recruitment, and communication.
  • Organizational Skills: Ability to manage multiple responsibilities, including scheduling, budgeting, and program logistics, efficiently and effectively.

Minimum Qualifications

Education:

  • Bachelor's degree required; master's degree preferred

AND

Experience:

  • A minimum of three years of coaching experience, preferably as a head coach at the collegiate level

Positions Supervised or Directed (Titles and Approximate Numbers)

Assistant coach(es): 1-3, volunteer assistant Coach(es): 0-2, Student workers: 0-3

Physical Demands Lift and carry 40-50 lbs. Examples: Push/pull patients on bed, stretcher (requires 29 lbs. push force), lateral transfers up to 50 lbs. of the patient's weight. Frequent to continuous standing/walking.
