Job Summary:

The Head Cheer Coach is responsible for the development, coaching and administration of all aspects of the Cheer Team in strict adherence to the rules and policies of Hawaii Pacific University. The position requires the ability to travel with the team and work on weekends and evenings. In addition, the head coach must maintain collaborative working relationships with administrators and coaches in the Athletics Department, other college offices and appropriate relationships with members of the media, donors and other individuals interested in the cheer program.

The Interim Head Stunt Coach is responsible for the development, coaching and administration of all aspects of a successful NCAA Division II Stunt program in strict adherence to the rules and policies of the University, the Pacific West Conference and the NCAA. The position requires ability to travel with the team and work on weekends and evenings. In addition, the Interim Head Coach must maintain collaborative working relationships with administrators and coaches in the Athletics Department, other college offices, and appropriate relationships with members of the media, donors, and other individuals interested in the sports program.

Location: This position is based out of our Saint Francis office in downtown Honolulu.

Qualifications:

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's Degree from an accredited four-year collegiate institution
  • 2 years of coaching experience at the intercollegiate level with successful recruiting and competitive track record, or 5 years of successful head coaching experience at the high school level
  • Demonstrated commitment to rules/policy compliance and a commitment to student-athlete success both academically and athletically and overall student-athlete well-being

Desired Qualifications:

  • Master's Degree
  • 3 years of head coaching experience at intercollegiate level
  • Knowledge of NCAA Division II rules
  • Experience with program administration at the intercollegiate level
  • College playing experience preferred

Other Qualifications:

  • Candidates must be legally authorized to work in the United States. Visa sponsorship and relocation allowance is not available for this position.
  • Report to work obligations to support the department and may require work during HPU's winter break, if necessary.
  • Must meet training and background check qualifications and comply with the Protection of Minors policy.
  • Upon hire, candidate must have reliable personal transportation to facilitate travel between to all HPU worksites and other locations as required by the position. This includes a valid driver's license and a personal vehicle that is legally registered and insured.
  • This position may also require driving responsibility for an HPU vehicle. Due to driving responsibilities, you must meet training and background check qualifications and comply with HPU's Vehicle Driving policy.
  • Able to work all shifts and extended hours.
  • Successful candidate will be able to work in an environment that utilize excellent time and stress management skills.
  • Regular, reliable, non-disruptive attendance is essential for this position, as is the ability to create and maintain collegial harmonious working relationships with others.

Key Responsibilities/Essential Job Functions for Cheer:

  1. Cheer Team - Develop, Teach, Coach and Guide student-athletes (30%)
  • Provide instruction to student-athletes during practice and competition hours.
  • Develop team members' skills and ensure the team has quality routines for the season
  • Practice accepted standardized safety in accordance with NCA guidelines.
  • Provide instructions for practice and competition as well as develop team members' skills and ensure the team has quality routines for the season
  • Choreograph/teach various cheer routines, including but not limited to jazz, lyrical, and hip-hop.
  • To be present and supervise at every scheduled team practices or workout sessions.
  • To be present and supervise mandatory study halls for the cheer team.
  • To exemplify and instruct on proper and appropriate appearance and costumes for performances or volunteer events.
  • Maintain morale and integrity of student-athletes and encourage and foster sportsmanship and pride within both the Cheer team program and the University.
  • Ensure that all student-athletes adhere to all university and code of conduct rules.
  • Supervise, mentor, and counsel team captains.
  1. Stunt Team - Develop and administer a successful sports program (30%)
  • Recruiting and developing student-athletes who will successfully represent the institution academically and athletically.
  • Scheduling and organizing practice and contests in accordance with applicable Pacific West Conference and NCAA regulations.
  • Attending and coaching all games and practices.
  • Administering sports program budget in line with the guidelines provided by the Athletics Department and the Office of Chief Financial Officer.
  • Coordinating procurement of uniforms and equipment.
  • Making travel arrangements for both on and off-island travel. Plan travel according to HPU Athletics guidelines and follow all policies and procedures as outlined in the HPU Athletics manual.
  • Keeping abreast and ensuring compliance with the Pacific West Conference and NCAA regulations while maintaining highest ethical standards of conduct.
  • Supervising assistant coaches and other program personnel.
  • Perform other coaching duties including compliance software data entry and game analysis and discussion.
  1. Fundraising and Community Service Efforts for Cheer & Stunt Programs(15%)
  • Assist with organizing and implementing program fundraising and community service initiatives.
  • Work with departments at the University to support student programs and initiatives as requested.
  1. Monitor and foster student-athletes' well-being and academic success (10%)
  • Monitoring student-athletes' academic progress in collaboration with the Athletics Academic Advisor.
  • Developing and instituting mandatory or voluntary study programs for student-athletes
  • Fostering student-athletes' well-being through provision of a safe and a non-discriminatory environment
  1. Support operations of the HPU Athletics Department (5%)
  • Participating at HPU community service, public relations or recruiting events
  1. Perform other related duties as assigned (10%)
  • Actively participates as an effective member of team by completing assigned duties, accepting additional assignments or reassignments.
  • Assist with HPU activities and events as needed.
  • Assists with seasonal peaks.
