Position Overview
The Head Boys & Girls Cross Country Coach is responsible for leading, planning, and coordinating all aspects of the cross country program at Horace Mann High School. This includes athlete development, program culture, training plans, meet coordination, communication, and community engagement. The coach will promote academic success, sportsmanship, leadership, and positive student experiences in alignment with the mission and values of the School District of North Fond du Lac.
Primary Responsibilities
Program Leadership & Culture:
Establish and maintain a positive, inclusive, and competitive running community grounded in Oriole Nation values.
Promote sportsmanship, character development, accountability, and "Above Average" standards on and off the course.
Create a supportive, team-first environment that encourages athletes of all abilities to pursue personal growth.
Athlete Development & Training:
Develop age-appropriate training plans for all levels, balancing skill development, endurance, and injury prevention.
Implement daily workouts that build aerobic fitness, strength, and technique (e.g., pacing, form, race strategy).
Provide individualized feedback and support athletes in achieving personal and team goals.
Monitor academic progress and support student-athletes holistically.
Team & Staff Management:
Recruit, supervise, and mentor assistant coaches and program staff.
Build alignment across levels to ensure consistency in training philosophy and expectations.
Conduct pre-season, in-season, and post-season meetings with staff, athletes, and families.
Program Operations:
Plan and organize practice schedules, meet preparation, entries, and transportation logistics.
Coordinate meet-day operations including set-up, supervision, and post-race responsibilities.
Manage uniforms, equipment, and inventory; collaborate with the Activities Director on budget needs.
Communication & Relationships
Maintain consistent and proactive communication with athletes, parents, staff, and administration.
Promote the program within the school and community to support participation and engagement.
Build positive relationships with meet hosts, officials, and opposing programs.
Compliance & Professionalism
Adhere to all school district, conference, and WIAA policies and procedures.
Ensure safe and equitable participation, including appropriate supervision and risk management.
Complete required certifications, trainings, and paperwork in a timely manner.
Seasonal Expectations
Attend all practices, meets, meetings, and program events throughout the season.
Complete required coach evaluations and attend end-of-season meetings with the Activities Director.
Plan, organize, or support summer training, contact days, and off-season development opportunities.
Reports To
Activities Director, Horace Mann High School.
