Enable students to develop competencies and skills to function successfully in society. Provide instruction and coach students to develop skills and ability to excel in sport assigned. Contribute to education program as a whole and to growth of students involved in athletics.Qualifications:Education/Certification:Bachelor's degreeValid Texas teaching certificateDemonstrated competency in the core academic subject area assignedSpecial Knowledge/Skills:Knowledge of core academic subject assignedGeneral knowledge of curriculum and instructionGeneral knowledge of coaching techniques and proceduresKnowledge of University Interscholastic League (UIL) rulesAbility to instruct and supervisor student athletesExcellent organizational, communication and interpersonal skillsExperience:At least three (3) years of successful experience as a high school or post-secondary basketball coach required; experience as a head basketballcoach strongly preferred. Head Basketball Coach Page 2 of 4 Major Responsibilities and Duties: Create a learning environment by developing and delivering high quality instruction that engages students. Develop and implement lessons plans that fulfill the requirements of district's curriculum program and show written evidence of preparation as required. Prepare lessons that reflect accommodations for differences in student learning styles. Present subject matter according to guidelines established by Texas Education Agency, board policies and administrative regulations. Plan and use appropriate instructional and learning strategies, activities, materials and equipment that reflect understanding of the learning styles and needs of students assigned. Conduct assessment of student learning styles and use results to plan instructional activities. Participate and implement research-based professional development as it relates to your teaching field. Use a variety of instructional techniques and media to meet the needs and improve the abilities of student athletic skills, teamwork and good sportsmanship. Manage and supervisor athletic activities, contests and practice sessions to promote individual growth in athletic skills, teamwork and good sportsmanship. Work with other members of school staff to plan and put in place instructional goals and objectives to ensure the overall educational development of student athletes. Participate in professional development opportunities, attend camps and clinics for latest updates and changes as it relates to the sport assigned. Establish performance criteria for competition and evaluate students' athletic abilities initially and on a regular basis. Take a necessary precaution to protect student athletes, equipment, materials, and facilities. Keep informed of and ensure compliance with all UIL rules. Monitor and enforce student eligibility criteria for extracurricular participation. Work with athletic director to schedule competitions and coordinate arrangements. Develop and coordinate a continuing evaluation of coaching program and make changes based on findings. Develop and install a comprehensive 7-12 basketball program which includes offense, defense and techniques to be used. Make decisions based on what is best for students. Create, maintain, and support a learning environment that is academically, emotionally and physically safe. Take time to know and build relationships with students. Provide opportunities and guidance for students to explore and develop their uniqueness as it relates to your discipline. Cultural diversity must be embraced to enhance the learning experiences of our students. Accompany and supervisor student athletes during athletes during athletic competitions in assigned sports on out-of-town trips. Instruct and advise students on NCAA regulations with regard to academic requirements for scholarships and recruiting practices. Apply and enforce student discipline during athletic contests, practice sessions and while on trips off school property in accordance with Student Code of Conduct and student handbook. Encourage, by example and through instruction, sportsmanlike conduct in all phases of athletic participation and school life. Actively recruit DeSoto ISD students into the basketball program. Establish and maintain open communication by conducting conferences with parents, students, principals and teachers. Serve as positive representative of DeSoto ISD and DeSoto High School across the local, regional and statewide school communities. All students, teachers, parents and staff must be treated with respect. Assist in selection of equipment and instructional materials. Compile, maintain and file all physical and computerized reports, records and other documents required. Maintain a current inventory of all fixed assets within program. Oversee process of cleaning, repairing and storing all campus athletic equipment. Head Basketball Coach Page 4 of 4 Supervisory Responsibilities: Provide leadership to assigned assistant coaches at the middle school and high school levels. Assist in the evaluation of assigned assistant coaches as it relates to coaching duties/assignments . Working Conditions: Mental Demands/Physical Demands/Environmental Factors : Must maintain emotional control and exercise reasoning and problem solving skills while under stress. Must demonstrate ability to communicate effectively (verbal and written). Should be able to interpret procedures and analyze data for decision-making. Frequent in-district and occasional in-state or national travel. Occasional prolonged and irregular hours. Safety: Contribute to the prevention of accidents and injuries by observing safety rules and District policy, practicing the principles and skills taught in safety training, wearing personal protective equipment as required, reporting injuries and incidences immediately to supervisor, and being proactive in the ongoing efforts to improve and maintain workplace safety.
