Job Title - Guidance Counselor

Supervised by/Reports to: Principal and/or District-level Personnel

Supervises: NA

FLSA Status: Exempt

Job Goals:
• To provide high quality comprehensive counseling and guidance programs for students.
• To provide consultative and collaborative services to teachers, parents, administrators and staff to support academic achievement and school success for all students.

Qualifications:

1. Master's degree or higher from an accredited university.

2. Valid Alabama certificate in counseling.

3. Three (3) years of successful teaching experience.

4. Ability to meet the suitability criteria for employment and/or certification licensure under the Alabama child Protection Act of 1999 and Act No. 202-457.

5. Possess and maintain a valid driver's license.

6. Demonstrates proficiency in oral and written communication skills.

7. Ability to develop and evaluate curriculum and programming specific to the needs of students.

8. Effective interpersonal skills, with an emphasis on communication and collaboration with a wide variety of people and groups, including, but not limited to students, faculty, staff, parents, and community members.

9. Ability to identify and solve problems as a productive team member.

10. Ability to use technology to communicate, to manage data, and to produce/submit required reports, correspondence, and/or financial information.

11. Physical strength, mobility, dexterity, stamina, and acuity to perform job responsibilities.

12. Ability to be punctual and in regular attendance.

13. Such alternatives to the above qualifications as the Superintendent may require.

Performance Responsibilities and Essential Functions:

1. Demonstrates support for the school system and its vision, goals and priorities.

2. Consults with and is a resource for teachers to facilitate the infusion of counseling content into the regular education curriculum.

3. Collaborates with elementary, junior high and high school personnel to assist students in making a smooth transition across grade-levels and schools.

4. Assists and support students, parents/guardians throughout the registration and course-scheduling process, providing guidance and assistance.

5. Provides orientation to activities for incoming students and their parents/guardians.

6. Models appropriate and innovative use of technology for students and staff.

7. Guides students in the development of their education plans and pathways.

8. Informs students and parents/guardians of test results and their implications for educational and career planning.

9. Interprets group or individual test results to faculty and administration for use in enhancing instruction.

10. Coordinates, plans, and participates in the implementation of school system assessment and/or state assessment programs in conjunction with building-level and district-level personnel as well as other credentialing assessments as assigned.

11. Consults with parents/guardians, teachers, and staff about the special needs of students and make appropriate referrals.

12. Participates in and/or coordinates programs and services for students to include, but not limited to, Section 504, Homebound, IEP meetings, etc.

13. Plans and conducts staff development programs and activities.

14. Facilitates conferences with teachers, parents/guardians and/or students.

15. Plans and conducts parent education programs.

16. Assists families with school-related problems and issues.

17. Consults with and refers students with problems (and their parents/guardians) to community-based resources and service agencies.

18. Conducts structured, goal-oriented counseling sessions to meet the identified needs of individuals and groups of students.

19. Plans and conducts staff development programs and activities.

20. Cooperates and collaborates with other professionals in enhancing the education of students.

21. Communicates with administrators, teachers, students, parents/guardians, and the community regarding the counseling and guidance program and its role in the educational program.

22. Identifies student needs and uses the results for program planning.

23. Establishes a planning calendar for counseling and guidance program activities.

24. Selects, administers, and interprets standardized tests to assist students in making appropriate educational and/or career choices.

25. Maintains adequate cumulative records on students.

26. Attends staff development programs, workshops, and conferences to improve professional performance and knowledge.

27. Participates in state-approved evaluation program as required.

28. Actively supervises students during assigned duty before, during and/or after school as directed.

29. Supervises and/or assists with extracurricular and co-curricular activities as assigned.

30. Maintains appropriate confidentiality regarding school/workplace matters.

31. Demonstrates initiative in identifying potential problems and/or opportunities for improvement in areas of responsibility.

32. Engages in professional growth and demonstrates professional ethics and effective leadership.

33. Reports potential problems, unusual events, or work irregularities to appropriate administrative or supervisory personnel.

34. Responds to inquiries, requests, constructive feedback, concerns and/or complaints in a timely and positive manner.

35. Properly uses and cares for equipment and material resources of the school system and effectively supervises and monitors others in the care, maintenance, and use of equipment and materials.

36. Maintains and submits reports, records, and correspondence in a timely and accurate manner.

37. Uses effective collaboration skills to work as an effective team member.

38. Serves on committees, representative bodies, task forces, or as a system delegate as needed.

39. Adheres to school system rules, administrative procedures, local Board policies, and state, federal, and local regulations.

40. Reports absences and takes leave in accordance with Board policies and procedures.

41. Performs any other job-related duties as assigned by Supervisor(s).

Terms of Employment: In accordance with Board's salary schedule.

Evaluation: Performance of this job will be evaluated in accordance with provisions of the State Department of Education and/or Enterprise City Board of Education policy on evaluation of certified personnel.
