23andMe is building a new kind of preventative healthcare, built on data that millions of people have chosen to contribute: deep genetic information layered with ongoing data from blood labs, electronic health records, surveys, and wearables. This is a senior leadership role in the membership pillar of our nonprofit, alongside our research and education arms. We are looking for a product leader to own the consumer health experience that turns that data into trusted, everyday health guidance, and to build and lead the team that delivers it.
The hard problem is this: a member's health signal is scattered across genetics, blood labs, EHRs, surveys, and wearables, and none of it, on its own, tells them what to do. You own the AI-powered products that pull those streams into one clear, evolving picture of a member's health and turn it into guidance they can act on. Trust is paramount; people only act on what we surface if they trust it, and that depends on how carefully we handle their data. Your job is to make 23andMe the place people go to understand their health and decide what to do next.
23andMe Research Institute is a nonprofit medical research organization that enables people everywhere to access their genetic information, learn about themselves, and participate in one of the world’s largest crowdsourced research initiatives. Our goal is to be a leading contributor to scientific advancement, uniting people around improving health and deepening our understanding of DNA, the code of life.
This is a Group Product Manager role. You own the consumer health product area, not a single feature, and you build and lead the product team behind it. You set direction across the surfaces that turn multimodal health data into something members understand and use. Partner teams own the data pipelines and the underlying science. You own the experience that ties them together and the roadmap that decides what comes next.
The core health experience. The surfaces where a member's health comes together, including the health home screen. You own what gets surfaced, how insights are framed, and the adoption and health-literacy metrics that show it is working.
Data connection. The member-facing experience of connecting EHR and wearable data: the prompts, what members get in return, and connection rates. You own whether members find connecting their data worth it.
Genetic insights. Polygenic and clinical risk scores are among the most powerful and sensitive things we can put in a member's hands. You own which insights we focus on and how they are surfaced and made actionable.
Privacy and trust. How members see and control what they share. You own this as a core part of the experience, working with design, security, privacy, and legal to get it right.
Clinical and regulatory fit. Medical, regulatory, and legal decide what the product can claim. You build a strong product within those limits and flag when a feature needs review.
The team. You hire, coach, and grow the PMs in this area, and set the bar for product craft across it.
Set the strategy. Bring the point of view that shapes where consumer health goes, and the analysis to back it. You own the what and the why.
Make the case, or kill it. Build the evidence for what to do and what to skip. The default is not to build. The bar is a clear argument that something is worth doing for the member.
Own the metrics. Define what success looks like, and read the data yourself to judge whether it is working, rather than waiting to be handed a dashboard.
Lead cross-functionally. Bring research, engineering, analytics, design, and marketing with you, often without direct authority.
Lead your team. Coach and grow your PMs, and represent the area to executives and partners.
Stay close to the member. Understand what members need from their health, and let that drive the what and the why.
Extensive product management experience (8+ years or equivalent), including time leading or mentoring other PMs, with a track record of launching consumer web and mobile products at scale.
Experience shipping consumer products in a privacy-sensitive, regulated space such as health or fintech. HIPAA or genetic-data experience is a strong plus.
Experience with AI/ML-powered products, and a working understanding of the ML lifecycle from data through evaluation and deployment, enough to make good trade-offs with the teams building the models.
Comfort with clinical, regulatory, and legal partners, and the judgment to know when a health feature needs review before it ships.
Fluency with data. You understand data structures and can build your own dashboards (for example, in Hex) to track product health.
The communication to carry a product vision and to work through technical trade-offs with engineers and executives alike.
Ability to work from 23andMe’s mid-Peninsula, CA office a minimum of 3 days per week.
Hands-on experience building and launching AI/ML products: LLMs, NLP, recommendation engines, or predictive modeling.
Experience with products built on large-scale, multimodal data (genomic, clinical, behavioral).
A knack for translating the outputs of complex algorithms into something a non-expert can understand and act on.
Experience partnering with BD or integrations to land third-party data (EHR or wearables) into a consumer product.
Interest in working closely with researchers building on novel science.
