Position Summary:

A Group Fitness Instructor plays a vital role in creating a safe, welcoming, and engaging fitness experience within the David Williams II Vanderbilt Recreation and Wellness Center. In this role, you will lead and inspire participants through high quality, effective, and dynamic group workouts. The ideal candidate possesses excellent communication skills, a passion for fitness and wellness, and the ability to create an inclusive and encouraging environment for members of all fitness levels.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Greet participants and build a positive community
  • Lead safe and well-structured group fitness classes according to established guidelines and formats
  • Provide a proper warm up and cool down as part of all class formats and ensure exercises are performed safely by providing clear instructions/cues
  • Assist participants with proper form and technique and provide modifications to accommodate varying fitness levels
  • Arrive 5-10 minutes before class to set up class, welcome early arrivals, and ensure classes start and end on time
  • Routinely prepare and change choreography/routines and music to keep classes fresh and engaging
  • Recognize and respond effectively in emergency situations
  • Identify and report any unsafe facility conditions or faulty equipment to your supervisor or facility team
  • Follow and enforce University and Rec policies and compliance standards

Professionalism & Team Contribution:

  • Maintain required certifications and provide copies to supervisor when renewed
  • Respond to participant inquiries and concerns with professionalism and care
  • Participate in meeting and training sessions when scheduled
  • Assist with promotion of rec programs and events
  • Check and respond to Vanderbilt communications (e.g., email) daily
  • Demonstrate professionalism, accountability, and adherence to policies and procedures
  • Support the Fitness team and Rec mission through a strong commitment to the role

Qualifications:

  • Current Group Fitness Instructor Certification required (preference given to specialty certifications of Pilates, Cycling, and Strength formats)

  • One to two years of teaching experience is required

  • CPR/AED First Aid certificate required

  • Ability to pass a university-mandated background check

  • Ability to work independently and adapt in a dynamic environment

  • Demonstrates knowledge and application of established exercise techniques and standards

  • Demonstrates a positive attitude, strong customer service, and a reliable work ethic

Hours:

This is a part-time non-exempt (hourly) position with an expectation of teaching 3 classes per week, with the opportunity to add more if necessary. Classes may occur Sunday through Saturday, including mornings, afternoons, evenings, and weekends.

Pay Range: $20 - $30 per hour
