Under general supervision, performs landscaping and grounds maintenance work of routine difficulty.
Typical Duties/Job Duties
- Operates hand and riding mowers to cut grass on University properties.
- Trims edges around walks, flower beds, walls, trees, and shrubs using clippers, weed cutters, and edging tools.
- Prunes and trims hedges and trees to shape, improve growth, or remove damaged leaves, branches or twigs, using shears pruners, or chain saw.
- Removes weeds from around shrubs, trees, and bedding plants.
- Plants grass, flowers, trees, and shrubs using gardening tools.
- Waters lawns, trees, shrubs and flowers using hoses or by activating fixed or portable sprinkler systems.
- Sprays lawn, shrubs and trees with fertilizer, herbicides, and insecticides using hand or automatic sprayer.
- Cleans grounds and removes litter, leaves, and other debris; removes trash from drainage ditches and culverts, using shovel and rake.
- Operates backhoe, front end loader, and forklift as needed.
- Helps maintain and repair water sprinklers.
- Uses high pressure water sprayer to clean sidewalks, porches, and buildings.
- Sharpens tools such as weed cutters, edging tools, and shears using file or knife sharpener.
- May paint fences and outbuildings.
- Spreads salt on public passageways to prevent ice build-up.
- Attends training, seminars, and other meetings as needed.
- Performs other duties as assigned.

- Principles and practices of lawn and grounds maintenance
- Operation, use, and minor repair of landscaping and grounds maintenance equipment and tools
- Hazards and safety precautions associated with general labor and grounds maintenance
- Applicable University policies and procedures

- Oral communication for interacting with supervisors, coworkers, and the public
- Proficient operation of landscaping and grounds maintenance equipment and tools
Abilities
- Calculate and determine weights, measurements, and quantities accurately
- Perform general labor and grounds maintenance work in various climatic conditions
- Follow written and verbal instructions to complete work as assigned
- Read, understand, and apply information from operation and maintenance manuals, chemical applicator instructions, policies, and procedures
Equipment Utilized
- Lawn mowers and hand tools
- Backhoe, front-end loader, forklift, personnel lift, and trucks
- Sweepers, seeders, and fertilizing equipment
- Irrigation systems and related equipment
Minimum Qualifications
- High school education plus one year of landscaping, grounds maintenance, or closely related experience.
- Must have a valid Texas driver's license and have a driving record acceptable to the University's insurance company.
- Must pass a pre-employment physical.
- Must pass a background check.
Preferred Qualifications Physical Requirements
Physical Requirements Position requires frequent walking, standing, pushing/pulling, bending and occasional carrying and lifting (up to 80 lbs.) Basic manual dexterity with both hands is required, and both feet are utilized in the operation of equipment and/or vehicles. Incumbent works in and out of doors and has regular exposure to moving machinery, high noise levels, dust, pollen, heat and cold.
