SALARY: Range 17 (+5 for bus cert.)
BASIC FUNCTION:
Under the general supervision of the Manager of Buildings, Grounds and Facilities/Maintenance, operates equipment used in general grounds care. Individuals holding this position are assigned work at various sites throughout the district. Assist lead custodians as directed. Do custodial duties as directed. Do manual labor and perform other related work as directed and/or assigned.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:
- Water, trim, edge, weed and fertilize lawns and turfed areas.
- Prune, irrigate, cultivate, spray and care for trees, shrubs, flowers and hedges.
- Pick up papers and debris.
- Drive a school bus on daily or on special trips and carry out those duties and responsibilities assigned bus drivers.
- Load and unload supplies.
- Lock gates and set alarms.
- Operate a variety of power ground equipment, including large gang mowers, tractors, back hoe equipment, man lift boom, trencher and sweepers.
- Perform a variety of specialized functions using a variety of tractor attachments.
- Drive a truck with a trailer attachment in transporting heavy-duty grounds maintenance equipment from work site to work site.
- Service grounds maintenance equipment and make minor adjustments and repairs and perform a variety of preventive maintenance functions.
- Mow large fields and sweep large areas of asphalt and concrete.
- Dig trenches for new gas lines, water mains and electrical lines and back fill the trenches.
- Perform all duties of a Custodian/Bus Driver I.
- Install and maintain sprinkler and irrigation systems, including the establishment of irrigation schedules.
- May spray for weeds and insect control.
- Move furniture and equipment and perform other routine grounds and maintenance functions.
- Receive work orders for daily or special projects and maintain daily records of the completed.
- Perform minor maintenance on various equipment as assigned, clean and make major repairs to mowers, blades, wings and filters as well as replace worn or defective blades.
- Report need for major repairs immediately and assure equipment is in safe operational condition.
- Maintain playgrounds and fields, flatten grounds around playground equipment and fill in holes with dirt, wood chips or other materials as necessary.
- Prepare athletic fields and other fields according to established procedures.
- Water landscape area including lawns, shrubs and trees using sprinkler systems and hand watering.
- Maintain and repair sprinkler systems.
- Perform all duties of a Groundskeeper/Driver II.
- Responsible for performing all small engine repairs on district equipment.
- Perform other ground''s maintenance duties as needed.
- Perform related duties as assigned.
- Assist in custodian duties when needed.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
Education:
- A high school diploma or equivalent.
Licenses:
- Valid California Driver''s License.
- California Special Driver''s Certificate to drive School Bus (issued by CHP).
- Valid California Class B commercial Driver''s license with passenger and air brake endorsement.
- Valid medical certificate and First Aid Certificate.
KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES:
Knowledge of:
- Operation, use and maintenance of light and heavy duty grounds maintenance equipment.
- Methods, procedures, materials and tools commonly utilized in grounds maintenance and gardening work.
- Sprinkler and irrigation system installation, maintenance and repair.
- Planting, propagation, landscaping techniques and procedures.
- Diseases, pests and infestations affecting trees, lawns and shrubs.
- Use of chemicals in the control of insect and animal pests.
- Safety precautions and the use of antidotes for chemicals used.
- Maintaining school grounds in a safe, clean and orderly condition.
- Small engine repair.
Ability to:
- Skillfully and safely operate and maintain light and large grounds equipment and use a variety of grounds maintenance and gardening tools.
- Perform heavy manual work functions pertaining to grounds maintenance, equipment operation and gardening work.
- Understand and carry out oral and written directions, maintain records.
- Establish and maintain cooperatively working relationships
- Perform heavy manual labor.

- Lifting and carrying items weighing up to 75 lbs.
- Dexterity of hands and fingers to operate grounds maintenance hand and power tools and equipment.
- Bending at the waist, kneeling or crouching.
- Digging and walking over uneven surfaces.
- Hearing and speaking to exchange information.
- Reaching, pulling and pushing.
Hazards:
- Fumes from vehicle and equipment operation and working around and with machinery having moving parts.
