JOB INFORMATION

Grounds Maintenance Supervisor positions supervise and train grounds maintenance crews or individual Grounds Maintenance Workers in the performance of grounds and facilities maintenance functions at the Citys major park sites and cemetery sites; establish work priorities; prepare work schedules; assign work to crews; inspect area grounds and facilities for proper maintenance; receive and issue service requests; estimate labor, materials, and equipment; assist in oversight of maintenance contracts; investigate citizen complaints and recommend resolutions; prepare reports; and perform other duties as assigned.

NOTES:

  • Eligible benefitted employees originally hired on or after July 10, 2021, will be automatically enrolled in the San Diego City Employees Retirement System (SDCERS).
  • Some Grounds Maintenance Supervisor positions may require unusual work schedules (e.g., weekends, holidays, nights, overtime, and shifts that exceed eight hours during certain times throughout the year).

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

You must meet the following requirements on the date you apply, unless otherwise indicated.

EXPERIENCE: Three years of full-time PAID experience which MUST include the following:

  • Fertilizing and planting lawns, shrubs, trees, and ground covers; pruning trees and shrubs; renovating lawns.
  • Operating, maintaining, and repairing grounds maintenance equipment; installing, operating, and repairing major irrigation systems; or installing, inspecting, and repairing playground equipment.

NOTES:

  • A certificate in Landscape Horticulture, Nursery Technology, Landscape Design, or a closely related field may be substituted for a MAXIMUM of one year of the required experience.
  • An Associates Degree in Landscape and Nursery Technology, Landscape Design, or a closely related field may be substituted for a MAXIMUM of two years of the required experience.
  • A General Contractors License - B or a Landscape Contractors License - C27 may be substituted for a MAXIMUM of two years of the required experience.
  • If self-employment is used to qualify, you MUST provide proof of self-employment and/or references with your application.
  • City of San Diego employees using Out-of-Class Assignment (OCA) experience to qualify must submit written documentation signed by their appointing authority or payroll specialist, detailing the work performed, dates, and total number of qualifying OCA hours. OCA experience without the required documentation will NOT be considered.

LICENSE: A valid California Class C Driver License is required at the time of hire.

SCREENING PROCESS

SUPPLEMENTAL INFORMATION
