Job Description Summary

Del Mar College seeks an experienced professional to serve as the Academic Advisor/Career Coordinator for the TRIO Educational Opportunity Center (EOC), a U.S. Department of Education grant-funded program. This position serves as a key support and advocacy resource dedicated to assisting low-income, first-generation, underrepresented, veteran, and non-traditional students in achieving academic, career, and personal success.

The Academic Advisor/Career Coordinator provides comprehensive academic advising, career guidance, and holistic coaching through proactive outreach, individualized support, and recruitment efforts. This role assists both prospective and enrolled participants in navigating secondary education pathways, including GED completion, as well as postsecondary admissions, financial aid processes, and academic requirements. The position also supports students in developing and achieving their educational and career goals.

Serving as a vital link between students and Del Mar College and community resources, this position facilitates workshops, outreach initiatives, and engagement activities. The Academic Advisor/Career Coordinator collaborates closely with faculty, staff, and community partners to promote student persistence, retention, and goal attainment.

This role serves students at Del Mar College and throughout San Patricio County, with additional outreach responsibilities in Nueces County as needed.

The position requires strong communication skills, adaptability, sound judgment, and the ability to work effectively in a fast-paced, student-centered environment, while maintaining accurate data collection and ensuring compliance with TRIO EOC reporting and documentation requirements.

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor's degree in Education, Psychology, Administration, Counseling or related fields.

Two (2) years of experience planning and implementing tutorial services to low-income, first-generation college students and students with disabilities.

Two (2) years of experience with academic advising, academic assessment, study skills development, and designing Student Success Plan for EOC eligible students.

Experience working with post-secondary administrators, faculty and staff.

Required Job Knowledge, Skills, Abilities

Knowledge of:

  • Career development theories, challenges, and best practices affecting low-income, first-generation, and underrepresented students, including adult learners
  • Secondary and postsecondary education systems, including high school completion options, GED preparation and testing processes, college admission requirements, academic programs, degree pathways, and student success strategies
  • Financial aid systems and processes, including FAFSA completion, scholarships, grants, and other funding opportunities supporting access to higher education
  • Federal and state laws, regulations, policies, and best practices related to student rights, confidentiality, privacy (FERPA), and required data collection, documentation, and reporting requirements for federally funded programs
  • Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint) and other technologies used for data tracking, case management, reporting, and student communication

Skills and Abilities:

  • Manage multiple tasks, prioritize projects, and maintain attention to detail in a fast-paced environment.
  • Adapt to constant changes and develop new initiatives as needed.

Preferred Qualifications

Master's degree preferred.

Master's degree in education, psychology, administration, counseling, or a related field.

Experience with grant and federal TRIO programs.

Skilled in use of database related software such as Blumen/Student Access, Etrieve, Datatel, Colleague, and Civitas.

Knowledge of FERPA laws.

Student Support and Academic Guidance

  • Provide proactive daily outreach and individualized academic, career, and personal support based on each student's educational goals and needs.
  • Assist students in navigating secondary education options, including high school completion and GED pathways, as well as postsecondary admissions, academic programs, degree requirements, and apprenticeship opportunities.
  • Support students in understanding and completing financial aid processes, including FAFSA and other funding opportunities.

Recruitment and Resource Connection

  • Coordinate recruitment and intake efforts by guiding prospective participants through the application process and ensuring all required forms and supporting documentation are accurately completed and submitted.
  • Serve as a Del Mar College and community resource expert, connecting students to tutoring, counseling, academic advising, mentoring opportunities, career development events, disability services, the professional closet, food pantry, and other campus and community support services.
  • Advocate for students by facilitating referrals and promoting effective use of available resources.

Job Duty

Workshops, Outreach, and Events

  • Develop and deliver workshops, presentations, and outreach activities for students, Del Mar College staff, and community stakeholders on topics including academic success, financial aid, college readiness, GED attainment options, and career development
  • Represent TRIO EOC at campus and community events to promote program awareness, recruitment, and student engagement
  • Provide students with comprehensive information on the full range of financial aid programs, including federal, state, and institutional resources
  • Assist students in identifying and applying for public and private scholarship opportunities
  • Guide students through the financial aid application process, including completion of FAFSA and related documentation

Job Duty

Data Collection, Reporting, and Compliance

  • Record and maintain accurate documentation of student interactions, services provided, and program outcomes.
  • Prepare and submit data for annual reports and other required federal, institutional, and grant‑related documentation.
  • Ensure compliance with TRIO EOC guidelines and institutional policies related to data management, confidentiality, and reporting.
