The Graduate Area Director (GAD) is a member of The Office of Campus Living and provides leadership for a residential area within the Campus Living footprint. The GAD oversees the safety and development of the residential area they are assigned to by conducting student outreach, supervising student leaders, and managing housing operations processes. To be successful in this position, the individual must excel at cultivating positive relationships with a diverse student community, mentoring student leaders, and effectively responding to emergency situations.
The ideal candidate will support Campus Livings four foundations: Purpose; Relationships; Social Justice, Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion; and Wellness.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
A successful candidate will
Have experience supervising or advising live-in student leaders/staff
Have experience serving in an on-call or emergency response capacity responding to facilities concerns and supporting students experiencing physical and mental health emergencies
Demonstrate a commitment to the advancement of Social Justice, Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion through personal or professional involvement on campus or in their community
Have the ability to write and verbally describe, in a clear, concise, and timely manner, communications regarding complex policies and procedures to students and campus partners
Demonstrate basic understanding of housing software, Google Suite, and conduct software
Be currently enrolled in a related graduate program
Be able to navigate the entirety of the assigned residential community, with or without accommodation, as the position requires quick and unrestricted movement across the campus grounds including the use of stairs.
ACADEMIC YEAR DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Residential Student Engagement
Cultivate positive relationships with a diverse community of residential students through consistent and intentional outreach and maintaining a presence in the assigned community
Develop a deep understanding of community needs through regular student engagement and creating opportunities for student feedback.
Provide support to students experiencing personal and academic challenges through interpersonal conflict mediation, connection to campus resources, and the use of helping skills.
Communicate effectively with campus partners such as the Case Manager, Counselors, Campus Safety, Facilities, and Academic Advising to coordinate student support efforts.
Support residents in planning and hosting resident lead programs and events
Provide resources and support to students for developing a respectful and inclusive community that fosters dialogue across difference
Work with campus partners and student leaders to support the programmatic efforts of assigned Living Learning Communities (LLCs)
Student Conduct & Emergency Management
Participates in the Area Director 24-hour on-call rotation
As time permits, adjudicates student conduct cases, generates educational sanctions, and maintains prompt communication and accurate record keeping throughout the conduct process.
Student Leader Support
Supervise the daily work, and evaluate the performance of, 5-12 student leaders
Mentor and develop student staff members focusing on leadership growth and professional development through weekly 1:1s and staff meetings
Assists with the development and implementation of a comprehensive training program for all student staff including August training, regular in-services, and January training
Teamwork & Teambuilding
Meet regularly with the assigned supervisor.
Works collaboratively with other Campus Living, Student Life, and College staff and faculty, including through participation in departmental and campus committees.
Volunteers to assist colleagues with programs, projects, and administrative work when needed
Other duties as assigned relevant to the operation of the Campus Living program
AGREEMENT PERIOD
Anticipated Start Date: July 2026 (flexible)
Anticipated End Date: May 31st, 2027 (flexible)
20 hours per week (average)
Some evenings and weekends required
COMPENSATION
$18.80 per hour

SUMMER HOUSING INTERN POSITION (SEPARATE POSITION)
The Office of Campus Living may elect to hire the Summer Housing Intern through a competitive process in which the current Graduate Area Director, if in good standing and meeting all position expectations, is invited to apply.
