JOB DESCRIPTION:

 

This position will assist the Geographic Information System (GIS) Analyst in performing a variety of GIS related tasks in support of the city's Public Works and Utilities Services Department, projects, and operations. Task will include data collection, editing and documentation, map production, and field mapping using global positioning system (GPS) receivers. 

Intern will also assist the Utilities Inspection team when needed. General duties and specific tasks of this position will prepare Interns to successfully enter the workforce or continue with their education upon graduation.

 

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Create and maintain accurate GIS records and document.
  • Update, edit, and manipulate existing feature class, geodatabases, and relational databases.
  • Field verify, acquire, download, correct, and document utility system information to prepare maps, drawings, and reports as directed.
  • Perform field GPS of Utilities and Public Works infrastructures using Trimble equipment.
  • Prepare paper copy maps and generate reports as needed.
  • Scan (using a large format scanner) and file Record Drawings/As-built as directed.
  • Support and assist internal and external users with GIS or appropriate related tools.
  • Research records, including but not limited to easements, as-built, and plats as necessary.
  • Follows safe working practices and has a working knowledge of safety practices and procedures.

REQUIRED EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

  • Must be enrolled (or have recently graduated within the past 2 years) an accredited college undergraduate or graduate program in Geographic Information Systems, Computer Science, Geography, Environmental Science, Engineering, or a related field, with an acceptable grade point average
  • Must have completed relevant coursework in Geographic Information System and AutoCAD. 
  • The city will consider an equivalent combination of education and experience that demonstrates knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform the job's duties.

 

ADDITONAL ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS

  • Valid Florida Driver's License

 

COMPETENCIES

  • Basic understanding of the use and operations of ESRI products, e.g., ArcGISPro.
  • Basic knowledge on using a Trimble GPS device.
  • Familiarity with global positioning systems and methods used to collect data.
  • Basic knowledge of Python or other programming software preferred.
  • Ability to comprehend and interpret site plans, construction plans, record drawings, safety procedures, and department's policies and procedures.
  • Basic knowledge of AutoCAD preferred.
  • complete projects on time. 
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office (Word, PowerPoint, Excel, Access).
  • Ability to communicate and coordinate several assignments at the same time.
  • Knowledge of arithmetic involved with engineering-type projects.
  • Ability to understand and follow written and oral instructions.
  • Ability to communicate effectively and courteously with the public, and other City employees

 

WORK ENVIRONMENT

  • Primarily, works indoors
  • Occasionally, works outdoors for GPS City Infrastructure (i.e., utility infrastructures such as manholes, valves, etc.)
  • Moderate noise level in the work environment
  • Exposure to radiant, electrical energy found in an office environment

 

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

  • Sedentary physical work requiring the ability to lift a maximum of 44 pounds
  • Occasional lifting, carrying, walking, standing, and driving
  • Vision sufficient to read computer screens, printouts, and related documents
  • Dexterity to operate a computer system and other related types of equipment
  • Speech communication and hearing to maintain contact with employees and citizens
  • Endurance sufficient to sit and work at a computer for long periods
