SMX Services & Consulting is seeking an experienced GIS Support Specialist / Geospatial Data Analyst to support the U.S. Geological Survey's Mineral Resources Program.
The selected professional will provide advanced Geographic Information System (GIS) support, geospatial data management, geological data analysis, cartographic production, metadata development, and database support for scientific and mineral resource investigations conducted throughout the western United States.
This role requires a candidate who can work independently while supporting multidisciplinary scientific teams involved in geologic mapping, mineral resource assessments, and geospatial data management activities.
Develop, maintain, and update geospatial databases supporting mineral resource investigations.
Create, edit, validate, and manage GIS datasets including feature classes, shapefiles, geodatabases, raster datasets, and attribute tables.
Perform advanced spatial analysis using ArcGIS Pro and ArcGIS Online.
Compile, validate, and organize geological and mineral-resource information from geological maps, technical reports, scientific publications, government databases, and industry reports.
Georeference historical and modern geological maps utilizing topographic maps, digital elevation models (DEMs), aerial imagery, satellite imagery, and coordinate systems.
Create publication-quality cartographic products including geological maps, mineral occurrence maps, cross-sections, technical figures, and scientific illustrations.
Develop and maintain FGDC-compliant metadata.
Support quality assurance and quality control activities for GIS products and databases.
Prepare technical documentation and support materials for scientific publications and project deliverables.
Support Government scientists and project managers in the execution of geospatial and geological analysis activities.
Bachelor's Degree in Geography, GIS, Geology, Earth Sciences, Geospatial Sciences, or a related technical discipline.
Minimum five (5) years of professional GIS experience.
Minimum five (5) years of ArcGIS Pro experience.
Minimum five (5) years supporting geologic mapping, mineral resource investigations, or comparable scientific GIS projects.
Demonstrated experience with ArcGIS Pro, ArcGIS Online, spatial analysis, geospatial database development, GIS data editing, metadata development, and cartographic production.
Experience creating and maintaining FGDC-compliant metadata.
Experience interpreting geological maps and technical scientific data.
Strong written communication and technical documentation skills.
Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
Previous experience supporting U.S. Geological Survey (USGS), Department of the Interior (DOI), or other Federal scientific agencies.
Experience with ArcGIS Spatial Analyst, ArcGIS Geostatistical Analyst, and ArcGIS Image Analyst.
Experience with Adobe Illustrator and Adobe Photoshop.
Experience supporting scientific publications and technical research programs.
Experience with mineral resource assessments and geological data compilation.
