Position Summary
The GIS Specialist provides technical support for GIS activities internal to the City and between the City and other organizations. This position supports cartographic needs of the City and specifically the Public Works Department.
Education, Training, Experience, Certifications, Licenses and Registrations
Education / higher education: High School Graduate or equivalent
Minimum number of years of directly related experience: Four years of experience with geographic information systems. Any combination of education from an accredited college or university in Geography, GIS, Urban Planning, Computer Science or related discipline and/or experience with geographic information systems totaling four years may substitute for the required experience.
Education and/or experience preferences: Bachelor's Degree in Geography, GIS, Urban Planning, Computer Science or related discipline and two years of related work experience.
Driver's License requirement: Infrequent Driver -- Regular Drivers License Required Endorsements: None
Note -- For any driver, driving record must always meet City driving and insurability standards.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Knowledge: Knowledge of ESRI suite of geospatial software-ArcGIS, ArcCatalog, ArcServer, etc.; programming languages used in GIS, i.e. SQL, Python and Visual Basic; cartography and automated mapping; relational databases, statistics, physical geography, hydrology, and topography.
Skills: Must be able to successfully produce documents/spreadsheets, communicate via e-mail, or perform data entry as necessary to accomplish the essential functions of the position. Use of technology, equipment and software typically used in the office environment. Skills in reading and interpreting engineering plans or reports, technical engineering specifications, standards, methods and procedures.
Abilities: Carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form; Write routine reports and correspondence; Ability to speak effectively before groups of customers or employees; Use math concepts to present data in charts, graphs, and presentations.
Interaction with Groups/Agencies/Entities: Internal: This position works with project and GIS technical staff on various assignments either detailed within the City's Strategic Plan or on an as needed basis. This position will also work with other staff members with varying degrees of GIS knowledge. This position must maintain harmonious, courteous, and understanding relationships, while fostering a collaborative teamwork environment. External: This position works with contractors, vendors, individual citizens, other government agencies, and the general public on planning City infrastructure projects. The position presents a friendly, courteous image for the City to the general public, customers, and public officials.
