Description:

Things unique about this location/position:

This position is provided through a National Park Foundation Grant and will support organizing, updating, and filling in GIS data gaps at Bryce Canyon National Park, encompassing infrastructure, utility, historical facilities, and natural resources.

Additionally, this position will be mentored by Bryce Canyon GIS and Facilities Specialists, as well as SUU's GIS Department. Ideally, this position will start as a remote and part-time position based out of Cedar City, UT, during the fall - winter months, with periodic (reimbursable) travel to the park to gather equipment, and begin onsite training. It will then transition into a full-time position based out of Bryce Canyon National Park beginning in May of 2027.

Some flexibility in scheduling and hours may be possible during the Fall - Winter months, but full-time work on-site at Bryce Canyon during the Spring-Summer season is expected.

Free or reduced-cost housing in the park will be provided during the Spring through Summer period, and possibly during the Fall-Winter (if requested) period at Bryce Canyon National Park.

Bryce Canyon National Park and its surrounding regions provide opportunities to experience world-class recreation, geology, wildlife, and dark skies.

Hours:

10-40 hours per week, depending on enrollment status and season. Part-time Fall-Winter, 2/4 - Full time Spring - Summer

M-F - some weekends as necessary. PT Fall-Winter, Full-time Spring-Summer

Overview:

The GIS Geospatial Information Specialist supports the management, organization, and dissemination of spatial data for natural and cultural resource programs. This position ensures the integrity, accessibility, and standardization of geospatial information within GIS databases and the National Park Service ArcGIS Enterprise. The role provides experience in data governance, metadata development, and digital cartography across a wide range of mapping and analytical projects. Interns will also assist in the collection and integration of new field data using mobile data collection applications and global navigation satellite systems.

Position Responsibilities:

• Manage spatial data storage, organization, and retrieval within GIS systems.
• Maintain metadata, ensuring compliance with established data standards.
• Support the development and maintenance of enterprise geodatabases.
• Create maps, dashboards, and web-based GIS products for internal and public use.
• Assist in quality assurance and quality control (QA/QC) of geospatial datasets.
• Collaborate with project teams to share, archive, and distribute spatial data.
• Provide technical support for GIS users, data access, and workflow efficiency.
• Ensure data confidentiality and adherence to data management policies.
• Assist in the field data collection of spatial data.

Qualifications:

• Must be age 18+
• Must be a U.S. citizen
• Must have a valid driver's license
• Incoming, current, or recent SUU student preferred

Preferred Qualifications:

• Coursework or experience in GIS, geography, data management, or related fields.
• Experience maintaining geospatial databases and managing large datasets.
• Familiarity with ArcGIS Pro, ArcGIS Enterprise, and metadata standards.
• Strong organizational skills and attention to data integrity.
• Ability to communicate and collaborate with interdisciplinary teams.
• Education: High school diploma or equivalent required; college coursework in GIS or data management preferred.
